Windows 11 is currently being developed as part of so-called “feature drops”, which means that Microsoft is packing planned innovations into larger packages that will be published at some point. The publisher is working on the fifth update called “Moment,” which will be released in the first two months of 2024, according to Windows Central. Specifically, our colleagues are talking about the delivery of the next major update for Windows 11 from the end of February 2024. The period from the beginning of March should also be considered as a possible introduction phase of the update, they say. The update is referred to internally at Microsoft as “Moment 5” or “February 24 Moment” for Windows 11, the report continues. The final version of the update is expected to be ready in early February, with general deployment scheduled towards the end of the same month following final testing. It will then be delivered again as a cumulative update via Windows Update. An optional preview should initially be available at the end of February before large-scale delivery begins as part of the March patch day, it is said.
“Moment 5” is expected to be the only feature update for Windows 11 in 2024, ahead of the release of the next major version of Windows later in 2024, currently in development by Hudson Valley under the codename “Moment 5.” As far as the innovations planned for “Moment 5” are concerned, the update is likely to be significantly less advanced than its predecessors. Microsoft’s main focus will likely be modifying the operating system to comply with the requirements of the European Union’s Digital Services Act (DSA). It states that companies considered “gatekeepers” must take additional measures to ensure fair competition because they have such a dominant position in a given market that they and their products potentially exclude competitors and freedom of choice of European consumers. Microsoft is therefore committed, among other things, to ensuring that Bing can be removed from Windows search. The possibility of removing messages from the widget table is also being considered. The Redmond-based company also wants to make some accessibility improvements and implement PC cloud integration through Microsoft 365.
