Upon landing, Shiffrin lost his balance and flew into the safety net. The medical staff immediately rushed to the athlete and the mountain runner got off the slope under her own power, albeit with a limp.
Shiffrin’s team said she was taken to Cortina Hospital to be examined for her left leg, which was injured in the fall.
The Italian Federica Brignone and the Swiss Michele Gisin and Corinne Zutter also suffered falls. Brignone and Gisin most likely remained injury-free, while Zutere suffered a knee injury.
Due to an injury, the season of Shifrin’s closest competitor, Petra Vlhova from Slovakia, has ended, while in the men’s category, the American’s husband, Norwegian Alexander Omod Kilde, and Frenchman Alexis Pinturo cannot continue the season.
Austrian Stefania Venire won the downhill on Friday with a time of one minute and 33.06 seconds. Second-place finisher Lara Gut-Behrami of Switzerland lost 0.39 seconds but was another 0.32 seconds behind, sharing third place with Canada’s Valerie Grenier, Austria’s Christina Ager and Italy’s Sofia Gojja.
In the downhill, Goja is the season’s leader with 290 points, 74 points ahead of Veniri. In the overall ranking of all disciplines, Shifrin is in first place with 1209 points and beats Guta-Behrami by 340 points.
