Shmihal said Kyiv wanted pragmatic relations with Slovakia, although Fico’s provocative statements had caused some tension. Just days before his visit to Ukraine, the Slovak Prime Minister questioned Ukraine’s sovereignty and called for a compromise with Russia.

“Despite our differences, we want to build a policy of new pragmatism in relations with Slovakia,” said Schmihal, who met Fico in the border town of Uzhhorod. Šmihals expressed hope that the meeting with Fico would open a new page in relations between the two countries.
“Of course there are some issues on which we can have different opinions, such is life,” Fico said during the meeting, adding that he had invited Schmihal to visit Slovakia.
As Shmihals said after the meeting, Slovakia will support the European Union program, which provides for the allocation of 50 billion euros to Ukraine.
In addition, Fico expressed his full support for Ukraine’s integration efforts in Europe, emphasized the Prime Minister of Ukraine.
The Slovak government will also not block the purchase of weapons and equipment from Slovak companies, emphasized Šmihals.
A day before the meeting, Fico told reporters that life was continuing as normal in Kiev, despite Russia firing rockets at the city several hours earlier, injuring nearly two dozen people.
Fico also said that there is no military solution to the war in Ukraine. He said that Ukraine would have to give up some territories.
