After the storm reached almost 160 kilometers per hour on the night of January 22nd, the weather service announced on social networks that the storm “Isha” had changed direction and was moving away.
Overnight, the storm left more than 55,000 homes in the UK without power as strong winds and downpours triggered more than 80 flood warnings.
According to the BBC, Northern Ireland was the worst affected, with more than 45,000 people without power, followed by the north west of England (8,000 outages), Wales (3,000 outages) and Cornwall (a few hundred).
A rare red warning has also been issued for Scotland for strong winds lasting more than an hour, particularly in the north.
The Scottish rail operator suspended services on Sunday evening and during rush hour on Monday. Air traffic control restrictions were also introduced in the United Kingdom and Ireland, leading to some flight cancellations.
The national weather service “Met Office” announced on social media that storm “Isha” is currently moving away. “However, it is still windy this morning and a yellow warning is in effect until midday. Minor disruptions are expected on Monday morning.”
Since the autumn, parts of Britain have been hit by a series of gusty and rainy storms, uprooting trees, knocking out power and causing flooding in river valleys.
“Isha” is the ninth storm since September.
On Sunday evening, the Met Office issued a red warning for “extremely strong winds threatening life, causing damage and disrupting traffic” on the north-east coast of Scotland and advised people not to leave their homes.
Network Rail, which owns rail infrastructure in England, Scotland and Wales, said it would introduce speed limits on most of its routes to prevent locomotives from running into fallen trees and other debris.
“Our weather experts confirm the forecast has deteriorated and the likelihood of damage to Scotland’s railways is high. From 7pm all passenger and freight services will cease and those trains still on the network will run at reduced speeds,” Network Rail of Scotland announced
