We are often asked whether a smart band or a smart watch really makes sense. I’m always a bit ambivalent about this: it’s very useful, but these devices need to be charged often. If you just go for a fitness tracker, the battery life will be longer, but again you’ll have the problem of significantly fewer features. But, I thought, are you really missing so many features? Can’t a wearable like this help with good intentions? I tested it with Xiaomi Smart Band 8.
Of course, it depends on your good intentions as to whether using such a device makes sense at all. One of my resolutions (there are a whole bunch of lists in Excel) is to exercise more. If you want to exercise more, it is helpful to be able to record these exercise sessions. The Xiaomi Smart Band 8 will take you a long way: there are more than 150 sports modes, so there’s a good chance your boxing training or Zumba (or similar) will also be there. He does a good job of keeping track of the sport, but you have to use the tape to really record the right training, right from the start. You don’t have to worry about sweat: it can withstand water, but we recommend rinsing it well in the shower: waterproofing is tested with water, not sweat, so it’s a good idea to use water to clean.

In addition, the tracker also has the necessary health meters, such as: B. sleep monitoring and checking the oxygen level in the blood (of course in addition to the heart rate). I always find sleep monitoring a bit difficult: sometimes it means you’ve been awake a lot of times while not noticing anything, and snoozing is often disastrous. However, if you sleep very regularly and don’t use the snooze function, you can definitely gain insights in the long run. I don’t use it myself because I have an IUD, but if you want, you can also use this bracelet to keep track of your menstrual cycle.
What I can appreciate about the Xiaomi Smart Band 8 is the design. With its slightly raised edge and the elongated pill look, it is a band that is quickly recognizable. It’s 48mm x 22.5mm and 11mm thick, making it slightly larger than the Smart Band 7. But it’s not too big either and that’s a very nice addition, especially for thinner wrists. Xiaomi calls it “sport meets style”, which I think is going a bit far, but the device looks good and is pretty light so you don’t really notice you’re wearing it, a big plus when it comes to playing sports. You can also put it on with a quick-release strap that allows for easy but secure donning.
Glowing screen
What surprised me positively was the 1.62-inch AMOLED screen. It looks pretty bright and I don’t wear it at full brightness. Very impressive how much color it can display for a device that costs so little money. The screen is also good for lazy people: The Corning Gorilla Glass 3 ensures that you don’t have to worry about cracks when you bump into door frames etc. In addition, the device does not have a speaker, so you cannot make calls like a secret agent. But hey, who does that?
What I’m missing is a GPS tracker. This makes it a better sports companion as you don’t have to take your phone with you. On the other hand, you would still have to take your cell phone with you when running if you wanted to listen to music: this is not possible on the band itself. With the Xiaomi Smart Band 8 you can answer a call or pause music, but I don’t see much point in that since you still need your smartphone.
Diploma
Anyway, these are really just small things, especially for what Xiaomi offers for under 40 euros, you can count yourself lucky with this smartband. It lasts a wonderfully long time on a single charge: you can use it for a week to two weeks and in an hour it is already charged for the next period. The device is operated entirely by swiping and you can quickly find your way around the device’s menu. If something doesn’t work, you can probably find it in the Mi Fitness app on your phone. I found the phone and the band connected well and there were many options for customizing the device, such as tiles. Even the color of the text can be customized.
Overall, I am impressed with the Xiaomi Smart Band 8. I think if you’re an avid athlete you don’t really need much more than this band. There are many features, you can also track your health well and this screen is so beautiful that you don’t expect to pay only 4 euros for it.
