The Controversy Surrounding Escape from Tarkov’s New Mode
The developer of extraction shooter Escape from Tarkov has announced that the new mode, previously locked behind a paywall, will now be accessible to everyone for a limited time of six months.
Escape from Tarkov has stirred up controversy with its introduction of the $250 ‘Unheard Edition’. This edition offers players an enhanced stash, a unique weapon, and additional slots on the in-game market. While some view this as a ‘pay to win’ scenario, the real point of contention is the exclusive offline PvE game mode included in the Unheard Edition.
Players who previously owned the Edge of Darkness (EOD) edition of the game are particularly upset. The EOD edition, no longer available, bundled together older content and DLC, but did not include any of the bonuses from the Unheard Edition. Despite the developers’ explanation that the Unheard Edition content is not considered DLC, the community remains in uproar.
Developer’s Response
In response to the backlash, Battlestate Games COO Nikita Buyanov addressed the issue on Reddit. Buyanov stated that they plan to introduce new unique features to the EOD edition as a gesture of appreciation for their contribution to the game. These features include unique cosmetics, faster return of insured items, the ability to skip daily quests, a new quest line, and enhancements to charisma, PMC karma, and personal trader buying limits. Additionally, EOD players will receive six months of high priority matchmaking and access to the Unheard Edition’s offline PvE mode.
Despite these efforts to appease the community, the situation has only escalated. Players argue that the offline PvE mode should not be considered a feature but rather as additional content, and the limited six-month access does not address their concerns. Furthermore, accusations have been made against Battlestate for attempting to combat ‘pay to win’ criticisms by offering more advantages to a paid-for edition that is no longer available for purchase.
As tensions rise, a Reddit thread discussing the issue has garnered 2,400 comments but remains at zero upvotes. Subreddit moderators have intervened to maintain order, emphasizing the need for respectful discourse among community members.

FCC Reinstates Net Neutrality Rules…
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) of the United States recently voted to reinstate the rules on net neutrality, reversing the repeal imposed during the Trump administration. This decision has reignited the debate on a crucial issue for the future of the Internet.
FCC reinstates net neutrality rules
Net neutrality is based on the principle that i Internet Service Providers (ISPs) they shouldn’t discriminate between different types of online content. Otherwise, the risk is that they may slow down the connection speed for some sites or services, offering paid “preferential lanes” for others. Something that users fear could make the web less free and democratic.
As The Verge explains, to achieve this goal the FCC has reclassified ISPs come common carriers according to Titolo II del Communications Act: this will allow you to have authority over suppliers. According to the chairwoman of the FCC, Jessica Rosenworcelthis approach is useful because “Internet access has now become a problemessential service for every aspect of modern lifeand as such requires basic supervision”.
The FCC headquarters in Washington, DC.
Suppliers, however, oppose the reclassification, fearing that could also lead to price regulation in the future against the interests of the market. However, they say they have never violated the principles of net neutrality.
The FCC introduced net neutrality rules in 2015 by the Obama administration, but then repealed in 2017 under the leadership of the Trump-appointed FCC chairman, Ajit Pai. Now the FCC has updated the 2015 rulesarguing that they will give the agency greater powers to oversee internet outages and address national security risks.
Republicans criticized the FCC’s vote, which passed 3-2 with the support of Democratic commissioners. They think it’s a symptom of excessive authority by federal agencies. However, Democrats think the courts will uphold the legality of the decision.
