The family is the basic social unit in life. It is the place where children grow up and learn values and morals. Family relationships, especially relationships between siblings, are among the most important factors affecting a child’s growth and development.
According to a report in the Medical Express newspaper, Dr. Doug Downey conducted his study based on data from a Chinese education study in which the number of participants reached 9,400 eighth grade students.
The Chinese data were compared with data from a 1988 American study of 9,100 eighth-grade students. The average age of children in both countries was 14 years.
Because of China’s one-child policy, about a third of children in the Chinese sample had no siblings (34%), compared to only 12.6% of American children.
In both countries, researchers asked students different questions about their mental health, and although the questions were different in China and the United States, they provided comparative data.
In China, adolescents without siblings showed better mental health, while in the United States, those with a sibling had similar mental health.
US data found that older siblings with large age gaps tended to have poorer well-being and mental health outcomes.
Siblings born within a year of each other had the strongest negative association with mental health.
The study data did not contain information about the benefits of sibling bonds and focused on the lack of attention the child receives due to the increasing number of siblings.
