Russian Military Expands Role of Women Amid Ukraine Conflict
The Russian military is undergoing a transformation in its approach to women, aiming to strike a balance between traditional family values promoted by President Vladimir Putin and the need for additional recruits for the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Recruitment Efforts
Efforts to recruit women have intensified, with the military reaching out to female inmates in prisons as part of a strategy to bolster its ranks. Recruiters in military uniforms visited Russian jails for women, offering inmates a pardon and a substantial monthly wage in exchange for serving in front-line roles for a year.
Reports indicate that dozens of inmates have already signed military contracts or applied to enlist, signaling a broader push to enlist female convicts. Additionally, women are now prominently featured in Russian military recruitment advertisements across the country.
Challenges and Contradictions
Despite the recruitment drive, the Russian military faces challenges in reconciling its need for new recruits with Putin’s emphasis on traditional gender roles. This has led to conflicting policies that seek to enlist women while sending mixed signals about the roles they can assume within the military.
Female volunteers have expressed frustration at being turned away or relegated to reserves, highlighting the inconsistencies in Russia’s recruitment practices.
Women in Combat
While the Russian military has historically been cautious about women’s participation in combat roles, recent conflicts have prompted a reevaluation of their potential. The idea of using women in combat gained traction following Russia’s intervention in the Syrian civil war and has become more prominent in the current conflict in Ukraine.
Ukraine, in contrast, has adopted a more liberal policy towards women in the military, with a significant increase in the number of female soldiers since the invasion.
Challenges and Opportunities
For both Russia and Ukraine, the role of women in the military has evolved over time, reflecting changing recruitment needs and societal attitudes. While Russia has a larger number of servicewomen, their roles have traditionally been more administrative.
As the conflict in Ukraine continues, both countries are exploring new avenues for female participation in the military, with Russia considering the potential of female convicts as recruits.
Impact on Women
Female inmates in Russia face unique challenges, including stricter rules and limited opportunities upon release. For some, enlisting in the military offers a chance at freedom, financial stability, and a sense of purpose.
Despite the uncertainties and risks involved, many women are willing to take the leap and serve their country if called upon.

Andreas Schjelderup, Super League | Schjelderup with a great score: – I’m almost speechless
Andreas Schjelderup continues to impress in Danish North Zealand. In Friday’s away game against AGF Aarhus, the 19-year-old knocked a free kick into the goal after 28 minutes and increased the team’s lead to 2–0.
The performance took the breath away from Viaplay’s Danish commentators.
– He is an absolutely unique talent. A fantastic goal, say the Danish experts.
– I am almost speechless. It is a free-kick technique that is truly refined. Almost a reference point for how a free kick should be taken, say the Viaplay commentators after the Norwegian bent the ball over the wall, via the crossbar and into the net.
Schjelderup has been loaned back to Nordsjælland from Benfica, but recently stated that the plan is to return to Portugal this summer.
Just over a week ago, Schjelderup scored a hat trick in 13 minutes against the same club in the opposite match at home. Nordsjælland eventually won the match 3-1 and is fully involved in the battle for the league gold in Denmark.
