The amazing speed comes with increased heat production, which the M580 tries to control with a special solution.
At CES 2024, which is coming to an end, almost every manufacturer has now flashed their new products, and of course MSI couldn’t be missing. There’s no question that their biggest hit was the Seam Deck-rivaling handheld console called the Claw A1M, but there were still plenty of interesting things in the Taiwanese manufacturer’s lineup of new releases.
This was the case, for example, with the SSD called Spatium M580 Frozr Liquid, with a capacity of 1, 2 or 4 TB, a data transfer speed of 12-14 GB/second, a PCI Express 5.0 interface and NVMe 2.0 protocol, which is not only with amazes with its specifications.
Of course, the ever faster data exchange also brings with it higher heat generation, which has already proven to be problematic with PCIe 5.0 SSD drives, so a solution also had to be found for the M580.
Precisely for this reason, MSI has equipped it with a small but powerful hybrid cooling system, responsible for achieving the best possible temperature. Heat dissipation is provided by a heat transfer base, a built-in water pump, a mini cooler and a fan, which is truly an amazing design considering its size.
The good question, of course, is whether MSI will actually release the drive in this form, and they will most likely make a decision based on community feedback. After all, a PCIe Gen 4 M.2 drive is usually enough for everything and we don’t even have to worry about it melting during operation due to a lack of sufficient cooling.
