CES 2023 was a bit late for the big AI hype that OpenAI started with its ChatGPT. The trade fair was already planned when the hype train set off at the end of 2022. After the pandemic years, the CES wanted one thing above all: back to normality. Everything is the same: consumer electronics, start-ups, a few cars. Definitely a lot of technology.

“AI changes everything”
AI has been present before, not just at CES. They were just called something else: algorithms. Digital assistants. Chatbots. But at least: AMD and Microsoft already announced at CES 2023 that AI will change everything – and not just Windows.
A year later we can say: That was not an exaggeration. Artificial intelligence has determined the technology year 2023 and remains the topic of the moment. When CES 2024 begins in Las Vegas next week, AI will be everywhere: in TVs, software, hardware and cars.
In addition to numerous AI-supported applications, chip manufacturers AMD, Intel and Qualcomm will also be bringing the processors to Las Vegas that will drive this revolution. Nvidia is expected to introduce a few new Geforce “Super” cards.
“AI is like the Internet”
Even when the hype is over, AI remains. Of course it will be everywhere, says Gary Shapiro, head of the CES organizer Consumer Technology Association (CTA). “AI is like the Internet, an essential component that won’t go away.”
The CTA counts more than 3,500 exhibitors shortly before the opening of the trade fair. Of these, around 1,000 are start-ups who show their innovations primarily in the “Eureka Park” exhibition area. The trade fair is accompanied by a conference program in which Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger and Siemens CEO Roland Busch will appear, among others.
The CTA is expecting more than 130,000 trade visitors. That would be slightly more than last year, but not yet at the level of the last pre-pandemic CES 2020 with over 170,000 visitors.
The auto industry is less represented than in previous years – at least a few big names are missing. Stellantis (including Chrysler, Opel, Peugeot) had already canceled its CES plans in the fall because of the strike by the US automobile union UAW. The German manufacturers are reducing their commitment (BMW, Mercedes) or staying away completely (VW).
New electric car
A new electric car from Honda is eagerly awaited. The Japanese want to show the new platform for the first time at CES. Suppliers such as Bosch and Continental also use the CES to present technical innovations.
This CES will also be an indicator of what the industry has learned from the upheavals of the past and what consequences they are drawing from the weaknesses in the supply chains that became apparent during the pandemic.
CES will take place in Las Vegas from January 9th to 12th. It starts beforehand with numerous press conferences and presentations. heise online and c’t are on site.
