Bologna on Tuesday became the first major Italian city to adopt the City 30 model, a strategy based on a 30 km/h speed limit on large parts of the city’s road network to reduce accidents, air pollution and noise, writes Euronews.
With the entry into force of a new decree imposing a speed limit of 30 km/h in some parts of Boloni, patrols have also been in operation in all parts of the city since Tuesday. According to ANSA, police are primarily targeting streets near schools, markets, hospitals, parks and sports facilities.
According to the city administration, the main aim of the controls is to “raise awareness, because only by changing street culture can the city achieve the goals of Città 30 (City 30), which protect lives,” the authority writes.
Valentina Orioli, councilor for mobility and public spaces, justifies the speed limit by saying that “it will create a safer, cleaner and more livable city, able to face the challenges of sustainability,” the councilor is quoted by Euronews .
However, part of the population is very dissatisfied with the city’s decision. The demonstration against the driving limit planned for Friday, January 19th will include the opposition Lega, Forza Italia, Fratelli d’Italia, some other parties and movements, taxi drivers and also citizens, reports Bologna Today.
