A massive cargo ship carrying thousands of Teslas and Kias has been sent back to China and South Korea by Australian authorities. There was nothing wrong with the cars, the problem was that many dangerous insects were discovered on board the ship.
The Glovis Caravel, a cargo ship with space for 6,500 vehicles, arrived in Australia in late December. Upon inspection of the ship, it was discovered that the yellow-spotted stink bug had made its way on board and was present in large numbers. This immediately prompted Australian authorities to deny access to the ship and the vehicles on it.
According to authorities, the yellow-spotted stink bug “poses a threat to the biosecurity of Australia’s native agriculture and wildlife.” The insect is known to cause damage to crops, fruit and ornamental trees. A smell also arises when the animal is threatened or killed.

Back to China
The ship’s crew were initially ordered to thoroughly clean the ship, which resulted in it continuing to sail off the Australian coast for several weeks. Ultimately, it was decided to send it back to China and South Korea, where the Teslas and Kias, respectively, will be brought back to shore to ensure there are no more stink bugs on board. Customers in Australia looking forward to their new car have no choice but to wait.
It’s not the first time the ship has been turned away because of stink bugs. In 2018, entry into New Zealand was refused after 600 of these insects were found on board, twelve of them alive. Two years later, in 2020, a boatload of 10,000 Hyundais and Kias were also returned due to the stink bug.
