Unlocking the Future: The Rise of DPU Technology with Mango Boost
Graphics = Seohee Jeong
Major global technology companies are competing to secure server optimization accelerator (DPU) technology. This is because server overload in data centers is becoming more frequent in the age of artificial intelligence (AI). DPU is a system semiconductor that reduces server overload. It serves to maximize server efficiency by optimizing the operation of the central processing unit (CPU), graphics processing unit (GPU), and solid state drive (SSD). According to market research firm Markets & Markets, the global DPU market is expected to grow 35% annually to KRW 100 trillion by 2027.
Nvidia acquired the Israeli semiconductor company Mellanox Technology for $7 billion (earned about 9.695 trillion) in 2020, and AMD also bought Pensando, a startup that develops semiconductors for data center servers, for $1.9 billion (earned about 2.63 trillion) last year. Earlier this year, Microsoft acquired DPU startup Funsible.
Mango Boost, an AI semiconductor startup founded in 2022 by CEO Kim Jang-woo (52), a professor in the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering at Seoul National University, is also challenging the DPU market. CEO Kim received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and a master’s degree in computer engineering from Cornell University, and a doctorate in electrical and computer engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. He is a former CPU developer at Sun Microsystems, which was acquired by Oracle, and is a distinguished scholar in the field of DPU who has been inducted into the halls of fame of world-renowned computer systems associations such as ISCA and MICRO.
CEO Kim, who met with Chosun Biz at the Mango Boost headquarters in Gwanak-gu, Seoul on the 15th of last month, said that he has been interested in DPU, which can solve the problem of overloading servers in data centers, since 2012. He said, “As AI performance becomes more sophisticated, we predicted that device overloads and data bottlenecks will become more severe In fact, ChatGPT alone uses dozens of servers with nearly 10 GPUs worth tens of millions of winning them, but cannot achieve the desired performance, so the server continues to operate.” “We are expanding,” he said.
CEO Kim said, “When I heard that Amazon Web Services (AWS) was using a DPU solution in 2018, I had an intuition that DPU has marketability,” adding, “Based on the design assets (IP) that owned by Mango Boost, we are working with AMD to develop a DPU product.” “Based on this solution, Samsung Electronics is also developing a PBSSD product that increases the storage capacity to the petabyte (PB) level.”
Mango Boost has attracted about 86 billion won in investment so far, which is more than 400 billion won in corporate value. Investment companies include Shinhan Venture Investment, IMM Investment, KB Investment, and Korea Development Bank. Currently, Mango Boost has 76 employees. CEO Kim said, “I believe our technological prowess has been proven as global companies such as AMD and Samsung Electronics have adopted the Mango Boost IP,” and added, “I want to take the first place in the global market.” The following is a question and answer session with CEO Kim.
—Why did you start Mango Boost?
“I have been conducting research in the field of semiconductor systems since I was an undergraduate student. Before working as a professor at Seoul National University, he worked as a CPU developer at Sun Microsystems, which was acquired by Oracle. As AI technology is growing rapidly, it is expected that the issue of server efficiency within data centers to run it will be highlighted. We have started research on DPU, which can solve data congestion and operate servers efficiently.
Around 2018, I heard that AWS had developed a DPU and had related technology, and I decided to start a business based on my intuition that the demand would expand. With 15 students who studied DPU together, he focused on developing technology that could be commercialized before starting a business. Developers who worked at Samsung, Intel, etc. also joined the company and founded it in 2022. “When I see big global technology companies acquiring startups and asking us to work together for technology development, I I think my boss is obvious.”
—What is the commercialization level of DPU Mango Boost?
“Product development with AMD has been completed based on the Mango Boost IP DPU. AMD provides the hardware platform, and MangoBoost supports customized solutions. Mango Boost has established a business model where it supplies DPUs to AMD in the form of circuit-switchable programmable semiconductors (FPGAs), and AMD supplies them to the data center operator. Among domestic companies, we cooperate with Samsung Electronics. Mango Boost DPU IP, specialized for server SSD storage, is applied to the PBSSD being developed by Samsung Electronics. We are also collaborating with Intel.”
—What is your competitiveness as a great company (semiconductor design)?
“In addition to having the original technology for DPU, our strength is that, as a great company, our business is not just focused on system-on-chip (SoC). Typical mindless companies invest tens of billions of hard earned money to develop a single SoC. Even if you spend a huge amount of money, it is worthless if a chip with the desired performance is not developed. Even after the chip is developed, it is difficult to predict whether it will be commercialized in the market. Mango Boost also has plans to develop SoC, but so far it is focusing on software solutions like IP. “I think we’ve proven our technological competitiveness just by getting companies like Samsung Electronics and AMD to use the IP of startup Mango Boost.”
—Can we surpass Nvidia, the leader in the AI semiconductor market?
“Nvidia is the absolute leader in the GPU business. NVIDIA was able to dominate the GPU market not only because of its excellent hardware performance, but also because it built a software ecosystem based on GPUs. DPUs do not yet have a software ecosystem as established as GPUs. The DPU solution with IP Mango Boost has the advantage of applying a function that can implement server acceleration, unlike the DPU developed by NVIDIA.
NVIDIA’s DPU is designed around ARM cores, so it can ease the burden on the CPU, but it has difficulty accelerating hardware within the server. Mango Boost has a large number of DPU IPs that can accelerate hardware. To use an analogy, NVIDIA’s DPU can manage complex traffic situations, but has limitations when building bridges or adding roads. MangoBoost can implement this function. “
—What are your goals for the future?
“We need to prove that the DPU is installed in the data center. To this end, we conduct quality tests by installing DPUs developed in conjunction with AMD in several customer data centers. Although we cannot mention the names of specific customers, we expect it to be commercialized soon. “I want to test the Mango Boost DPU technology and show that it takes first place in the global market.”
