Dissatisfaction with Vladimir Putin over the failed war in Ukraine is growing. Former State Duma member Ilya Ponomaryev claims it is time for a revolution. He told British media that the Legion, which has been preparing for an attack for two years, would help him overthrow Putinism in the country.
A coup could be imminent in Russia, said former Russian MP and one of Vladimir Putin’s biggest critics, Ilya Ponomaryev, in an interview with the British newspaper The Sun. “A revolution similar to that of 1917 is approaching. We are at an important milestone and are ready to strike,” says the fighter. He claims he is not fighting Russia, but rather Putin and Russian fascism.
“We have to fight against the Russian regime. Putin is very, very afraid of us,” Deliveries. At the same time, he admits that he doesn’t feel safe anywhere. Some time ago he even said that he sleeps next to a machine gun. “Right now we are fighting against the evil of Putinism. We are at war, we know what we are dealing with. Our men risk much more than us,” says Ponomaryev.
He also outlined several options for getting rid of Putin. “The first is that Putin will be overthrown by the Russian political elite. In this case, power would pass to Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, which would mean the end of the war. But little would change and Russia would remain under the tyrannical rule of corrupt elites,” Ponomaryev believes.
The second option, in his opinion, would be for the Security Council to take control of Russia. Its secretary Nikolai Patrushev is said to hold a strong position in the Kremlin; at times he was even discussed as a possible successor to the president. The third option is a military coup, which would have to be led by a strong personality.
But Ponomarjev would go for the fourth option. “There is only one positive scenario that would guarantee that there will be no more Putinism. It’s about rousing people to take to the streets,” he says. But he didn’t reveal how. He only said that he had “his people in the Kremlin.”
“We are gathering fighters, we are gathering armed people who are preparing for regime change,” Ponomaryev revealed this to the Express website.
He is convinced that the Russian people are ready to attack. “It will not be easy, the revolution needs military support,” he added. The so-called Legion for a Free Russia, which, according to Ponomaryev, is the country’s “largest resistance network,” could help. It should be founded in 2022 with the aim of ending the Kremlin regime.
Ilya Ponomaryev was a member of the Russian State Duma. He has lived in Kiev since 2016 and received Ukrainian citizenship in 2019. From the beginning of the Russian invasion, he helped protect the city with the local militia.
