French authorities announced that they had discovered a man in the undercarriage of a passenger plane that arrived in Paris from Algeria. He was severely hypothermic but alive, writes The Guardian. The 20-year-old man was found during a technical inspection after the Air Algerie flight from Oran, Algeria, landed at Paris’ Orly airport, the prosecutor told AFP.
The man had no documents with him. He was taken to hospital in serious condition. A source at the airport said the young man was “alive, but his life is in danger due to severe hypothermia.”
Commercial aircraft fly at an altitude of nine to thirteen kilometers, where the temperature usually drops to around -50 degrees Celsius. At the same time, the lack of oxygen significantly reduces the passenger’s chances of survival in the undercarriage compartment, which is neither heated nor pressurized.
According to the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), between 1947 and 2021, 132 people they call black passengers attempted to travel in the undercarriage of commercial aircraft. According to the FAA, the fatality rate for these people is 77 percent.
