Teenager Turns Himself In After Assaulting German Politician
A 17-year-old teenager surrendered to the authorities after confessing to assaulting a German politician on Friday. The victim, Matthias Ecke, a candidate for the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) in the upcoming European elections, was reportedly attacked while putting up campaign posters.
The minor approached a police station in the early hours of Sunday morning and admitted to the assault in the city of Dresden, as stated by Saxony Police. Additionally, three other individuals are believed to have participated in the attack, but their current whereabouts remain unknown.
Another campaigner from the Greens Party was also targeted by the group of four assailants, according to police reports.
Political Blame Game
The SPD Saxony branch pointed fingers at the far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD) for the violent incident. The AfD has been gaining significant traction, particularly in Eastern States like Saxony.
Expressing their outrage, the SPD Saxony stated, “Violence and intimidation of democrats are the tools of fascists. The seeds planted by the AfD and other right-wing extremists are now bearing fruit.”
In response, Jörg Urban, the AfD party leader in Saxony, condemned the attack, emphasizing that assaults on politicians are direct assaults on democracy.
While acknowledging the condemnable nature of such attacks, Urban also raised questions about the SPD’s role in fueling political tensions that could lead to such violent escalations.
Political Figures React
Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz, took to social media to denounce the attack on Matthias Ecke and other candidates, highlighting the threat such incidents pose to democracy. He urged unity in standing against such acts of violence.
Scholz extended his well wishes for Ecke’s swift recovery, noting that the 41-year-old politician had to undergo emergency facial surgery following the assault.
