Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN)– The Court of Cassation of Abu Dhabi confirmed verdicts convicting a citizen, his wife and 16 defendants of different nationalities in 12 cases of committing crimes of damage to public funds, forgery, bribery, profiteering, appropriation and commercial fraud to the Emirati Al-Khaleej newspaper.
The sentences for the first defendant and his wife included “66 years in prison, fines and restitution of 39 million UAE dirhams (approximately $10.6 million) for the total number of cases decided.”
The verdicts also included sentencing the remaining defendants to prison terms ranging from three to 15 years and fines of 13 million dirhams (approximately $3.539 million) for committing these crimes after they were brought to public attention by the public prosecutor’s office in Abu Dhabi, which began its investigation after receiving reports from relevant authorities, alleged that the main accused and his wife committed an illegal criminal activity and set up special warehouses in their house to store expired food and consumer goods, and worked on it with the help of others “to change the expiry date and offer them for sale again,” the newspaper said.
The offenses committed by the defendants included “violations of the regulations governing the water pipe connecting one of the farms and failure to install a meter for it, damaging the pipes of the water system, attempting to seize a public road between two farms, and “Disruptions to the flow of public land transport.”
The defendants also intentionally “provided false and misleading trade data for goods and products, including organic foods, endangering people’s health and lives and promoting adulterated and expired goods,” the newspaper said.
