Revolutionizing Air Combat: AI Takes the Lead
At Edwards Air Force Base in California, a groundbreaking experiment unfolded under the scorching sun. An unconventional orange and white F-16 fighter jet soared into the sky, not with a human pilot at the controls, but guided solely by artificial intelligence. Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall witnessed this historic event firsthand, marking a significant milestone in military aviation.
The Rise of AI in Military Aviation
The integration of AI into air combat represents a monumental leap forward since the era of stealth technology. The Air Force's ambitious plans include a future fleet of over 1,000 unmanned AI-enabled warplanes, set to be operational by 2028. This strategic shift underscores the military's commitment to embracing cutting-edge technology.
Testing the Boundaries at Edwards AFB
Edwards Air Force Base, renowned for its history of aerospace innovation, served as the backdrop for this groundbreaking dogfight. Within classified facilities, a new generation of test pilots is honing their skills in training AI agents for combat scenarios. Secretary Kendall's presence underscored the Air Force's confidence in the future role of AI in aerial warfare.
AI in Action: The Vista Experiment
During the exhilarating flight, the AI-controlled F-16, known as Vista, executed lightning-fast maneuvers at speeds exceeding 550 miles per hour. Kendall experienced gravitational forces five times that of Earth as Vista engaged in aerial maneuvers with a human-piloted F-16, showcasing the capabilities of AI in combat situations.
Addressing Concerns and Challenges
While AI presents unprecedented opportunities, concerns about autonomous decision-making in warfare persist. Organizations like the International Committee of the Red Cross advocate for stringent regulations to ensure human oversight in critical operations. Secretary Kendall reaffirmed the importance of maintaining human control over weapon deployment.
The Strategic Imperative for AI-Enabled Aircraft
The shift towards AI-controlled planes is driven by a confluence of factors, including security, cost-effectiveness, and strategic advantage. In a hypothetical conflict scenario with China, the U.S. Air Force recognizes the need for agile and cost-efficient unmanned aircraft to counter evolving threats in electronic warfare and air defense systems.
The Future of Air Combat: AI's Ascendancy
As AI continues to evolve, the prospect of swarms of unmanned aircraft reshaping the battlefield looms large. The Air Force's pivot towards AI-controlled jets reflects a paradigm shift in military aviation, emphasizing the agility and adaptability of autonomous systems in modern warfare.
Embracing Innovation: The Path Forward
Despite initial skepticism, Vista's success in AI-controlled dogfights highlights the rapid progress in autonomous aviation. The fusion of real-world data and simulation-based learning sets the stage for AI to outperform human pilots in air-to-air combat, heralding a new era in aerial warfare.
Preparing for the Future
As the Air Force navigates the transition to AI-enabled aircraft, the imperative to stay ahead of adversaries remains paramount. The relentless pursuit of innovation and technological superiority underscores the military's commitment to safeguarding national security in an era defined by rapid technological advancements.

The situation in the Donetsk region – the progress of the Russians is beginning to slow down
The Defense Forces recaptured certain positions in the Liman direction.
The pace of Russian advance in the Donetsk operational zone is beginning to slow down. Ukrainian military journalist Bogdan Miroshnikov shared this observation on Telegram.
The observer writes that the occupier still has small successes in the areas of Krasnogorovka and Ocheretinoye, Pervomaisky and Netaylovy, Novomikhailovka and Umansky. At the same time, Miroshnikov notes some positive aspects for the Armed Forces of Ukraine: “110 has returned (110 separate mechanized brigade). Some other units are with her. There is still a shortage of shells, but not as severe. Defense lines are being built”

Miroshnikov also says that the Defense Forces recaptured certain positions in the Liman direction – “The enemy captured some of them for 2 weeks.”
At the same time, the observer does not believe that the front in the Donetsk region has already been stabilized: “The situation in this operational zone is quite complex, and I would not expect that the occupiers will be pushed too far.”
Earlier, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said that the Russians were preparing to try to expand their offensive actions.

Man and woman burn Koran in Malmö, the day before the start of the Eurovision Song Contest
A man and a woman burned a Koran in Malmö, Sweden, a day before the Eurovision Song Contest festivities start there. This was shown in a video on Friday, which went live on social media. A Palestinian flag was also burned during the action in Malmö city center, not far from two Eurovision locations.
Swedish police are being criticized for allowing the Quran burning so close to the big event. From Saturday there will be many concerts and parties in the Swedish city for a week, building up to the grand final of the Eurovision Song Contest on May 11.
A total of more than one hundred thousand visitors are expected in Malmö. In addition to the musical event, various protest actions have also been announced due to the war in Gaza, by both pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli demonstrators. According to the Swedish broadcaster SVT, the police expect more than 40,000 participants on Thursday for a demonstration against Israel’s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest. The action is just before the second semi-final in which Israel plays.
On Thursday, the Israeli National Security Council tightened the travel advice for the Swedish city. Israelis planning a visit to Malmö are advised to reconsider.
Many artists, including Swedish ones, had advocated a boycott of Israel because of the war. But the organization rejected that.
