Over time, artificial intelligence (AI) will be integrated into robotics to create innovative and economical solutions. Recently, researchers at Stanford University developed a robot that can perform complex household tasks, showing that high technology does not always come at a high cost.
Stanford researchers have managed to build one Robot with the ability to prepare a full menu of Cantonese dishes under human supervision, with a budget of only 32,000 dollars (approx. 28,000 euros). This is in stark contrast to the high cost of other robots that perform similar tasks and whose prices can reach hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The robot with a name Mobile LOVE, was trained using AI to perform various tasks autonomously, such as cooking shrimp, removing stains, and calling an elevator. This training combined new demonstrations with data from previous human operations, allowing the robot to acquire skills more efficiently than traditional AI training methods. Check out the video and their website at mobile-aloha.github.io:
Mobile ALOHA was taught Complete seven different tasks This required mobility and dexterity, such as rinsing a pan or clapping. The training included various remote operations by the researchers, followed by autonomous exercises by the robot.
Despite these advances, the article notes that robots still face challenges in tasks that require precision and coordination, such as grasping and manipulating objects, skills at which humans naturally excel.
This project highlights the growing capabilities of robotic hardware and the critical role of AI in increasing these capabilities. The Stanford team plans to train the robot to do even more complex tasks, such as picking up and folding wrinkled clothing, a traditionally difficult challenge for robots due to the irregularity of shapes and textures.
In my view, this development is an inspiring example of how technology can be made more accessible and useful in everyday life. It represents a window into a future where robotics and AI are harmoniously integrated to improve our lives in practical and efficient ways.
