The public prosecutor’s office is demanding 16 years in prison for Hamid S., owner of a supermarket in Hoogeveen. According to the public prosecutor’s office, he is the one who killed Jihad Jafo with pistol shots. S. may have received help in disposing of the body. This is what RTV Oost writes.
Jafo was found dead in the canal near Bruchterveld in May 2022, wrapped in a blanket and plastic. The body was weighted down with a 17-pound tripod, but still floated on the surface. The jihadist victim had been missing for six months.
According to the public prosecutor’s office, Hamid S. (47) is the last person to see the jihad alive. S. stated that he dropped the victim off at a roundabout in Enschede on the evening of the disappearance. An acquaintance of Jihad’s is said to have been waiting there in a black Mercedes. “But the man with the car was never found,” the officer said. “The statement appears untrue.”
Telephone data shows that on January 2, 2022, his “brother” Hamid spent several hours in Hardenberg, near where the Enschede resident’s body was found. The suspect has a simple explanation for this. “Then I got my corona vaccination.” However, this claim was not checked by the GGD.
A hair was found in the blanket in which the body was wrapped. Based on DNA testing, the hair appears to belong to Hamid or a person related to him on his mother’s side. The label on the blanket also matches the blankets found at Hamid’s home and office.
In addition, shop owner Hamid removed a roll stand from a fire hose at the halal supermarket in Hoogeveen. The scroll found with the body was compared to the location in the store where the object was located. “The tripod I found is not mine. I threw it from my workshop into a container full of scrap iron in Ommen.” The container’s owners didn’t see the red roll stand or Hamid.
For this reason and due to the characteristics, the official considers it very likely that it is actually the same tripod.
The investigating authorities secretly placed listening devices in the Hoogeveen supermarket and in one of the suspect’s cars. A few months after the body was found, the suspect told one of his store employees about the intensive police investigation. “Who is dead? The king? A Prime Minister? It’s just an asylum seeker.” He now claims he said this out of frustration because the police made things so difficult for him by searching his shop and confiscating a car.
The hair, the tripod and the blankets do not in themselves indicate Hamid as the perpetrator, says the public prosecutor. All in all, says the prosecutor.
Umut Ural, the suspect’s lawyer, says the prosecutor’s office failed in its investigation. In his opinion, too many assumptions were made and no murder weapon was found. The lawyer therefore demands an acquittal.
Hamid is the last to speak. “I didn’t kill him. If I had, I would admit it and say why.”
The court will make its decision on February 20th.
