On the scale of the universe, humans are the size of ants. The distances between successive celestial bodies are so great that our lifetime would not take long to reach them, given the technology currently available. Further corners of the solar system You are a mystery to us. One of the scientists decided to count what should be there.
A planet the size of Mars on the edge of the solar system?
Eight planets orbit the Sun continuously, with Neptune being the furthest away. However, this is not the end of the solar system, but only a small part. It lies beyond Neptune Not Kuipera, where you can observe the dwarf planets Pluto, Haumea and Makemake. The scattering disk continues to expand until we finally reach the hypothetical Oort cloud.
It could be in this unexplored space countless trans-Neptunian objects and it cannot be ruled out that some of them are planets. Theoretical astrophysicist Amir Siraj of Princeton University has calculated how many alien planets there could be out there that remain hidden from our view. According to his calculations, it could exist on a purely mathematical level 1.2 planets with a mass greater than that of Mars; 2.7 with a mass comparable to that of Mars; and 5.2 with a mass comparable to that of Mercury.
Of course, these are free planets that were first observed in 2000. These are planets that separated from their stars and were thrown out of their home systems to move freely throughout the galaxy. It’s not clear how common this phenomenon is, but we’re getting better at detecting these loners, which means the numerical estimates are becoming more precise.
Interestingly, these planets don’t necessarily remain free forever. If they come close to a star during their journey through the galaxy, gravity begins to affect them. Such a phenomenon is known to occur on a smaller scale using Jupiter as an example.
Siraj wanted to know how likely it was that something like this would happen to him The sun. So he began making estimates of the number of alien planets in the Milky Way and estimates of the percentage of stars that might host such planets. He used this information to calculate the probability of these planets passing nearby Solar system close enough to be captured by the sun’s gravity.
