On Wednesday, Vladimir Putin arrived for the first time as Russian president on a working trip to the Chukotka Peninsula in the Russian Far East. This was reported by the Russian state agency TASS. Putin was immediately convinced that he was full of strength despite his age, added the Russian website Meduza, which operates from exile in Latvia.
Putin had previously stated that he had not yet visited all Russian regions and would also like to visit Chukotka. He visited one of Russia’s easternmost regions in 2008, when Dmitry Medvedev was prime minister and president.
Putin arrived in Chukotka on Wednesday afternoon local time, TASS wrote, recalling that it was nine hours longer than in Moscow. On Wednesday, clear and frosty weather prevailed in Anadyr, the administrative center of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug. According to TASS, thermometers showed around minus 25 degrees Celsius.
According to the agency, this year will also be Putin’s first trip to the regions. Last year he visited more than 20 federal territories, including the so-called new regions in the occupied part of Ukraine.
Among other things, Putin visited a greenhouse in Chukotka where tomatoes, cucumbers and basil are grown despite the prevailing frost. The Kommersant newspaper published footage of a reporter accompanying the head of state. “Our cucumbers in the store cost 500 rubles (about 125 CZK), tomatoes 650 (about 163 CZK), and the imported ones cost 1,000-1,200 rubles,” said Natalya Makatrova, head of the greenhouse. She admitted that tomatoes were successfully grown in Čukotka for the first time.
Putin is running for re-election in the March elections for another six years. The Meduza website claims that opponents in the presidential election are carefully selected by the Kremlin so that the 71-year-old head of state does not appear like a “grandfather” in comparison; candidates must be at least 50 years old, appear serious and enjoy little popularity, such as Leonid Slutsky , the leader of the Nationalist Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR).
