The non-governmental organization Human Rights Watch represents the outgoing US President Donald Trump a devastating testimony out. “Trump was a complete disaster for human rights“, said the director of the group, Kenneth Roth, in an interview with Reuters TV in Geneva. Trump had mocked human rights in his own country. The attack on the Capitol on January 6th is only the latest example of an accumulation of abuse of democratic principles in the four years of Trump’s tenure. Roth called on future US President Joe Biden to make human rights a guiding principle of American foreign policy and to adhere to it “even if it is difficult”.
Trump had ingratiated himself with “every friendly autocrat under the sun,” said Roth. He only criticized states he perceived as opponents for their handling of human rights: Venezuela, Cuba, Iran and “sometimes China”. This “completely inconsistent approach” had no credibility whatsoever. His criticism was powerless because the addressees were aware that it served a different political agenda, not a principle.
Roth commented ahead of the publication of his group’s annual report. He called on Biden to cut arms sales to countries like Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Israel. In addition, he should criticize India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his policy towards Muslims, even if India will be an important ally in China policy. In addition, Biden should bring his country back to the Human Rights Council of the United Nations. Under Trump, the United States left the council.
