Last year we saw the premiere of several portable gaming consoles (so-called handhelds) from the largest electronics manufacturers. In addition to the updated version of Steam Deck, this time with an OLED screen, we have premieres such as ASUS ROG Ally or Lenovo Legion Go. MSI also presented a similar device during CES 2024 in Las Vegas. In contrast to the previously mentioned models, MSI has opted for the latest Intel systems from the Meteor Lake generation.

I was able to use MSI Claw twice during CES 2024 – once at the Intel trade show and once at the MSI booth. In this case, we are talking about a fairly slim, portable console, the dimensions of which are 294 x 117 x 21.2 mm. However, in contrast to ASUS ROG Ally, Lenovo Legion Go or Steam Deck (OLED), MSI opted for Intel Core Ultra 5 135H and Core Ultra 7 155H processors from the Meteor Lake generation. During the presentation you can play various titles including: Assassin’s Creed Mirage. Although gameplay was smooth most of the time (the game always had XeSS enabled in performance mode), there were still moments where the animation would momentarily “freeze.” Minor problems will be resolved by updating the software. Overall, however, performance was very optimistic, thanks to the much more powerful integrated Intel ARC Graphics graphics system instead of the Iris Xe Graphics (if we hypothetically used the previous generation).

What caught my attention was the fact that the MSI Claw stayed cool even during intensive use (and especially long-term use, since these devices are practically constantly switched on at trade fairs). The Cooler Boost HyperFlow system is responsible for cooling here, which includes, among other things: two fans and two heat pipes. In contrast to the consoles from Valve, ASUS or Lenovo, MSI has also installed a larger battery with a capacity of 53 Wh. During a conversation with an MSI representative, I received information that the built-in cell provides about 4.5 hours of continuous gaming without the need to plug in the console to charge. For such a small device, the capacity and efficiency of the cell are quite impressive. For the screen, the manufacturer chose a 7-inch IPS display with Full HD resolution and a refresh rate of 120 Hz. The screen seems to be almost a copy (in terms of parameters) of what we already received in the ASUS ROG Ally. MSI Claw will go on sale in the first half of the year, with prices starting at $699 – so it will be very competitively priced compared to the ASUS ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go.
