The largest NATO exercise since the end of the Cold War begins next week. In addition to the member states, the Swedish army with a total of 90,000 soldiers is also taking part. Alliance Military Committee Chairman Rob Bauer said today that NATO must undergo a transformation to withstand war and prepare for an era in which anything can happen at any time. Society views it as forceful.
The Chief of General Staff of the Army of the Czech Republic, Karel Řehka, also repeatedly talks about the readiness for any development of the conflict in Ukraine, who spoke in the autumn in the interview program ČT 24 about the efforts to prepare for a major conflict.
Also visiting parliamentarian Radek Vondráček from the ANO movement said he would like Řehka to tone down his war rhetoric: “I heard Mr. Řehka’s interview maybe the day before Christmas in which he talked about preparations for a nuclear war .” . I would really ask for some moderation in these statements. Someone should tell him to calm down. Yes, the army should prepare for every option, but please tone down the public statements. It arouses emotions, Mr. Reka should be removed. “It’s better to let the Defense Minister speak,” Vondráček pleaded for moderation in his speech.
Senator Miroslava Němcová defended General Řehka and said that he was very competent for his position. “I consider Mr. Chief to be a very professional person and I am very happy that we have such a competent person at the head of the General Staff at this time when the war is really raging almost beyond our borders.” He talks about the same thing, what the chairman of the NATO Military Committee is talking about. “It also says that we need to change our thinking from a time when everything was predictable to a time when anything can happen and it is our duty to prepare for it,” she said.
He does not see the statement that it is necessary to prepare for a possible conflict as scaremongering, on the contrary: the knowledge that we are prepared can allay our fears. “When we talk about worries and fears, they are natural. I think everyone is horrified that they would live in the state in which, for example, Ukrainians live today. But that awareness, when we count on having an army that knows and informs us, that it’s preparing for potential threats, and that we’re getting that information at that moment, relieves us a little bit of those big things we fear and takes away the burden of this horror,” believes Němcová.
He does not believe that General Řehka should moderate his public statements: “I have not recorded any such statement from Mr. Chief of General Staff that would upset me.” On the other hand, I would expect more frequent information, either from him or from people who are in the army, to sufficiently inform the civil public so that all sectors of society begin to understand the risks to which we are exposed,” continued the member of the upper chamber of parliament.
She pointed out that Russia is also significantly strengthening its army: “If we consider that this year Russia has allocated almost thirty percent of its budget for armaments, they call it strengthening defense, but that means everyone who is in their hands ” ” At the same time, this increased the budgets of the armed forces of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the secret police, which corresponds to a total of forty percent. So what do we expect from them? They are rearming themselves thoroughly and I am preparing for it plan to increase the war they are now waging against Ukraine tenfold,” she stressed.
In your opinion, this could all turn against us in the future: “Russia says we are an enemy country.” Every now and then we hear reservations about Poland, the Baltics, Finland, Sweden, etc. I think that it is always beneficial to be prepared,” the senator added.
She then explained that she did not understand the statement of the leader of the parliamentary movement ANO, Alena Schillerová, that we don’t need tanks, but we need roads. “That was basically a statement in view of the elections coming up this year. And I think she said that because she’s trying to outdo the competitors in the political spectrum and attract people who will demonstrate in the streets and say that there is a diplomatic way and that it is possible to end the war, by giving in to Russian demands. And some of them are real Putin sympathizers,” said Němcová, member of the Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee.
Another topic was the dispute over the correspondence voting promoted by the government. The second day of negotiations on postal voting ended on Thursday evening. SPD leader Tomio Okamura spoke for almost eleven hours. According to opposition representatives, this proposal contradicts the constitution. More than 70 MPs remained registered for the debate and only two of them made it.
According to Němcová, the state’s task is to provide all its citizens with the right to vote and not to discriminate against those who are away from home. “The state should accommodate them and allow them to choose their correspondence.” Even with this secrecy, I don’t see a problem,” he says.
In the future, Němcová also sees electronic voting as one of the alternatives to make voting easier. “The road leads here, I was in Estonia and this country has no problem with it.” But now I would be happy if we at least overcome the obstacle of remote voting, at least something that could be done to improve access to elections “said Senator Němcová, adding that she would not rule out the possibility of electronic elections, but now she does not have the strength to enforce it.
