The game’s first DLC called Wartales was released in December, so it’s finally time to present one of the best mercenary simulators of recent years, developed by the French company Shiro Games, in this week’s edition of our regular games test. They made the Evoland games, the Viking city-building game Northgard, and Dune: Spice Wars, which released this year, among others. Wartales belongs to the mercenary simulator genre, which has slowly developed into its own genre in recent years (see Battle Brothers, Stoneshard, Battletech, Iron Oath) and was in early access from the end of 2021 before it was released properly last April has been published.
In the game you can manage an army of mercenaries, and the creators deliberately made it a point to ensure that the main missions do not determine the gaming experience, but rather the management of our little warriors, from salaries to food to the development of their skills. There is a magical epidemic that affects the entire gaming world and we can help warlords, bandits or ordinary civilians in their good and bad things by moving from city to city. So the game can actually be divided into two parts: In one part we travel with our small team from A to B to hunt, fish, trade or terrorize the dust people along the way, in the other part on a square grid map, known from X-Com, divided into circles, we fight with soldiers, hikers or creatures of all kinds.
Wartales’ greatest strength is that it is a fully-fledged sandbox game, so it is not the story written by the creators that dominates, but our own stories. A mercenary lost in an unexpectedly dire situation, a special shield found in a crypt has at least as much influence on our story as the relationship of our fighters to one another, their characteristics such as bloodthirsty, courageous or huge, and the ability modifiers that come with them . We can rename each of our heroes, give them their own equipment and it’s even worth giving them a profession, such as blacksmith, fisherman or miner, so that there is always someone there to help supply the mercenary army.
And this is necessary, you can’t just march around the map for days without paying attention to the health of our warriors, repairing their equipment and always giving them food. However, beyond that you can play the game in any way you want, you can be street criminals who rob merchants, you can be real heroes who don’t accept HUF for help, or you can even choose to only take bounty hunting jobs. The decision is absolutely ours.
In addition, the first add-on Pirates of Belerion was released in December, with which we can now pirate on a completely new map. There are already ship battles here, we can upgrade our ship and new enemies and opponents will appear. Additionally, there is online cooperative play, so the $50 price tag with the add-on is very reasonable for a game with hundreds of hours of play time.
After’s weekly gaming recommendation does not always present current events, but rather the Telex editorial team’s selected favorites.
