Spain has confirmed the end of nuclear energy production and extended the deadlines for renewable energy projects. According to the official plan, all seven remaining reactors are to be shut down between 2027 and 2035. In his statement on social networks, Spanish economist Daniel Lacalle calls the local government’s green policy “ridiculous” because at the same time the country is at significant risk of multiplying purchases of Russian liquefied natural gas.

Spain on Wednesday confirmed plans to shut down its nuclear power plants by 2035 and unveiled energy measures including extended deadlines for renewable energy projects and a revised Renewable Energy Action.
The five existing nuclear power plants currently cover a fifth of Spain’s electricity needs. The government’s preliminary agreement with power plant operators to suspend their operations was negotiated back in 2019, the oEnergetice.cz server reported.
Economist Daniel Lacall said that the news of nuclear decommissioning in 2027 could be better understood when one considers that significant amounts of LNG are flowing into Spain from Russia: “Spain’s ridiculous ‘green’ energy policy…Spain is increasing sixfold in 2023 Purchase of Russian natural gas. “Liquefied natural gas,” said the economist on the social network X.

Spain is the European country that imports the most liquefied natural gas from Russia and, according to local media, achieved record purchases on the Iberian Peninsula this year.
“The year 2023 will end as the year in which the most Russian gas entered the Spanish system in its history,” El Mundo reports in its article. The newspaper recalls that Russia is the third largest supplier of hydrocarbons to Spain after Algeria and the United States, accounting for 18.1% of total gas imports to this European country.
The future of nuclear power plants, which generate around a fifth of Spain’s electricity, was a key issue in the recent election campaign as the opposition conservative People’s Party (PP) vowed to reverse the planned shutdown. Recently, one of the main business lobbies called for expanding the use of these power plants, Reuters reported.
