[Nettavisen] The EU decided last year that all mobile batteries – and all other batteries – must be better and easier to replace. Now the EU is coming up with new requirements – now also for chargers. A number of electronic products are now being equipped with one type of charger: USB-C. The requirement takes effect on December 7, 2024. This is announced by the National Communications Authority (Nkom).
This means that all of these devices get the same charger:
- Mobile phones, tablets and e-readers
- Digital cameras
- Video game consoles
- Headphones (headphones and earbuds)
- Portable speakers
- Wireless mice and wireless keyboards
- Portable navigation systems
The same requirement applies to laptops from April 7, 2026.
Apple didn’t back down
According to the British state broadcaster BBC, Apple is said to have been unenthusiastic about this charger revolution.
– Strict regulations on such devices restrict innovation rather than encourage it, an Apple representative is reported to have told the BBC.
But they have already started shipping mobile phones with this charger.
But the Power electronics chain is satisfied.
– Power is positive about the suggestion and it’s great that the cables can be used interchangeably. “Good for the consumer and, last but not least, good for the environment,” Power marketing manager Elizabeth Gill tells Nettavisen.
This is also the opinion of Nkom, which is responsible for drawing up the regulations for the new directive and checking whether the products sold comply with the requirements
– This is an important contribution to reducing the amount of electronic waste as well as reducing raw material consumption and CO2 emissions. “This is an example of how changing regulations bring benefits for both consumers and the environment without compromising the benefits we get from the products,” says division manager Frode Målen at Nkom on the company’s website.
