Esteban Ocon (Alpine) may be concerned that Alpine’s new 2024 car is “a bit slow”.
After a turbulent 2023 season, Alpine, based in Enstone in England and Bily in France, finds itself in a difficult situation, but Alpine appears concerned after reports that its new car has failed an FIA crash test.
Renault-owned Alpine, which was embroiled in management, staff and shareholding turmoil last year, has announced it will unveil its 2024 car on February 7. This event will also unveil a new hypercar for the World Endurance Championship (WEC), which will compete in Formula 1 and Le Mans. Participation is planned for Mick Schumacher, who has joined the WEC team.
In 2024, the team will be without long-time engineer and manager Alain Permane, who is currently linked with a move to AlphaTauri.
Regarding Alpine’s 2024 car, Spanish sports newspaper Marca reported that Sky commentator David Croft said: “Esteban (Ocon) said before Christmas that the 2024 car was a bit slow.” “That’s what I said,” said he.
It’s a worrying statement, but French driver Ocon hopes Alpine can emulate Aston Martin’s performance in 2023 and make a big leap forward this season.
“I don’t know if that’s realistic, and I honestly don’t want to, but that’s what we have to look for. That’s what we should strive for.”
“I will not start the new year with other thoughts, otherwise I will not be a winner,” added the 27-year-old Ocon.
