Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) — When Canadian photographer Shane Gross posted these enchanting scenes of midshipman fish, his social media followers agreed they had never seen such creatures before (see video above).
And you can’t blame them because these baby fish look like they came out of a horror movie.
Gross documented these creatures on the Canadian island of Vancouver in the summer of 2020.
The Canadian photographer said in an interview with CNN Arabic: “This was the second year in a row that I tried to capture this scene and it required a special probe lens to be able to photograph the baby fish.”
In the video clip you can see how the somewhat transparent-looking little fish with large black eyes opens its mouth suspiciously.
Gross, a photojournalist specializing in marine conservation, pointed out that the young fish in the eggs grow under the care of the father fish.
When the fish surface, they cling to the yolk sac, which supplies them with the nutrients they need until they grow up and can swim independently.
Confirming the different reactions to these interesting creatures, the Canadian photographer said: “Some people find little fish very cute, others find them scary and strange.”
He explained: “But everyone agrees it’s amazing and they told me they’d never seen anything like it before.”
These fish migrate from the deep sea to the intertidal zone every year, transporting nutrients and chemicals back and forth.
