Arsenal FC lost three expensive points in the English title fight on Thursday evening. After all, the Gunners lost 2-0 to West Ham United on their own field. There was a lot of controversy surrounding the Hammers’ opening goal: the ball seemed to go over the line, but the goal was still allowed.
While most leagues are currently in hibernation, play in the Premier League continues. Arsenal even had the chance to take back the lead from Liverpool on Thursday evening. But then the Gunners had to beat West Ham on their own field.
Questionable hit
That turned out to be anything but self-evident for coach Arteta’s team. He had provided Trossard with a starting berth for the occasion, albeit in a slightly more reserved role. But the Red Devil saw his team fall behind after just fifteen minutes.

After an assist from Bowen, Soucek made it 0-1. At this point there was strong protest from the home team: the ball appeared to go over the line after Bowen’s cross. However, the VAR was unable to give a final answer based on the available images and so the referee’s judgment was followed.
Former player kills Arsenal
A bitter setback for the Gunners, who still had enough time to correct the situation. However, Trossard and Co. were unable to create enough of a goal threat in the first half. Arsenal were a little more dangerous after the break. Among other things, Rice tried to harm his former team.
But West Ham proved extremely efficient. Ex-shooter Mavropanos, of all people, managed to double the lead. Arsenal then remained the dominant team, but the second goal ultimately proved to be the final blow. In the final phase the guests even missed a penalty.

This means Arsenal lose top position and offers Manchester City, who still have a game in hand, the opportunity to level the playing field. The Hammers then climb back to sixth place and are fully in the race for European tickets.
