The South Africans (in green) gave a rugby lesson to the Cameroonians on Saturday in Andohatapenaka. |
A demonstration of strength and great control from the South Africans. The first opening match of the 2024 African Women’s Cup, which is currently being played on the grounds of the Makis Andohatapenaka stadium, in Antananarivo, saw the victory of South Africa with a score of 55-0 against the players of Cameroon, Saturday.
It was a lesson in rugby which showed that South Africans remain the leaders in Africa. To compete against them, there is still a long way to go. Cameroonians have learned a lesson that they will not soon forget.
Faced with South African supremacy, the Cameroonians managed to hold their own during the first twelve minutes, a period of observation that the South African players used to refine their strategy. Once this period was over, the South Africans took the offensive.
Based on their style of play, which involves kicking into touch and forming a scrum after receiving the ball, the South Africans struggled to get past the Cameroonian defense. The latter managed to hold on despite repeated attacks from the South Africans.
A rout
The match was interrupted in the 13th minute following the injury of a South African player, taken from the field on a stretcher. After the restart, the South Africans found the fault and opened the scoring with the first try from player number 12, bringing the score to 7-0.
Fate fell hard on the South Africans, as the number 22 was injured again and had to leave the field on a stretcher in the 22nd minute. The two new signings brought a plus for South Africa who immediately scored two more tries to lead 19-0 at the end of the first half.
The second half started at 2:08 p.m. The South Africans stepped up their game and in the space of 20 minutes, they scored four tries, in the 44th, 49th, 54th and 58th minutes, making the score 43-0.
The Cameroonians tried everything to score at least one try and save the honor, but they did not succeed in breaking through the South Africans’ tight defense. The Boks women’s version continued their momentum, scoring two new tries in the 64th and 70th minutes, bringing the score to 55-0.
With a burst of pride in the 75th minute, the Cameroonians approached the South African goal for the first time, but they failed to flatten out following a foul. They lost the ball. South African domination turned into a rout for the Cameroonians, who failed to score a single point. The final whistle blew and the South Africans kicked into touch. Game over.
