Yuen Long Food – Indian brothers run a family-run shop selling momo dumplings and hot-selling fried pops
“We are a family-run business and almost all of the recipes, such as the cheese used in the restaurant, are based on traditional recipes.” Gary, owner of The Momo Place
If you want to eat Nepali or Indian food, you should go to Jordan and Yau Tsim Mong! I didn’t expect to find this Indian and Nepalese fusion restaurant in Yuen Long that opened a few months ago and is run by an Indian family. Although the name of the shop is “Momo Place” (Momo means Nepalese dumplings), the dishes are actually a mix of Indian and Nepalese dishes. All the spices in the store are delivered directly from India and Nepal, which is very authentic.

Surprisingly, I was able to find an authentic Indian and Nepalese style specialty shop in Yuen Long. There are only a few high-rise seats in the store and it specializes in takeout.
Indian family run shop specializing in Indian home cooked food
The shop is run by two young brothers and their two mothers, all from northern India. At the helm is 21-year-old younger brother Gary, who once worked at the local Michelin-starred Indian restaurant CHAAT. Although I didn’t work in the kitchen at the time, I learned a lot about the highest standards and strict handling of ingredients and dishes. “We are a family business. Almost all recipes, such as the cheese used in the restaurant, are made in-house from traditional recipes. Also, my friend is Nepalese and she added her family recipes to form the current menu.” Gary continued that while there are many Indian restaurants in Hong Kong, they don’t serve the dishes that Indians eat every day. Style, and the taste is also relatively strong and can even change to suit local tastes. He wanted to showcase more authentic food that Indians eat every day, with more select ingredients.
The posters and panels in the store are full of Indian and Nepali features.
The shop is run by owner Gary (right) and his eldest brother David, while his mother works closely in the kitchen and cooks.
The store uses more than 30 types of spices, all shipped directly from India and Nepal. In addition, the goods are not pre-packaged. They are hand packed and shipped when an order is placed. They are extremely fresh. Pictured here are cardamom, cloves, saffron and Kashmiri chili powder.
Dumpling fillings include chicken, pork and vegan. The picture shows pork stuffing mixed with cabbage and onions.
The hot-selling fried pani puri dumplings with spicy gravy are the point
Momo is at roll call and of course we talk about dumplings first. All are packaged in-house and have a maximum shelf life of a day and a half. Throw them away if they are not used up to keep them fresh. Dumplings can be steamed, deep-fried, or pan-fried, with the pan-fried ones being the most delicious. Compared to the momo eaten in public, the meat is obviously juicier and the skin is thinner and not too tough. However, Gary repeatedly emphasized that the highlight was the dumpling sauce, which was based on tomato sauce and red pepper, whipped and mixed. The spices are all shipped directly from India. They are fragrant and spicy, and the taste is very unique and not easy to find in the market. But when it comes to hot-selling snacks, it has to be the fried balls of pani puri. Fried balls are eaten at room temperature. Chickpeas are placed in the hollow inside. When consumed, they are filled with spiced water. The entry is slightly sweet and sour, and the fried balls are crispy. But a bite only costs $32/six pieces, which is almost worth the meal.
The dumpling shell is thinner and firmer.
MOMO dumplings $46 (steamed 8 pieces), $50 (fried 8 pieces).
It is packed in-house and stored for no more than a day and a half. Sauce available as chutney, tomato chutney or mint chutney. We particularly recommend the yellow chutney, which is pleasantly spicy and yet strong.
Deep-fried dumplings are more delicious.
The filling doesn’t become too crumbly and leaves a juicy consistency.
There is also a street snack from North India called “Cheese White Bean Pancake” which is made of firm cheese with a thin crispy crust along with guava and corn kernels to give you that delicious cheese taste. The hot dish recommendation is “Indian Pancake Roll”, where you can choose between beef and chicken. “Many people think that not all Indians eat cows because Hindus make up a large part of the population, but in fact they do exist.” Many people in India eat cows. For example, I like to eat beef.” Australian beef is used, marinated and cooked with spices and wrapped in a smoky and elastic crust. It is hot and delicious in the mouth. The overall price may be a bit high in Yuen Long District, but food of the same quality is significantly more expensive on Hong Kong Island.
Crispy fried balls $32.
The restaurant’s No. 1 seller, Fried Balls, are actually Indian street snacks. The hollow pom po balls are filled with potatoes, chickpeas and seasoned water. You can eat one bite at a time. It’s sour, sweet and… crunchy.
Mango cheese $30.
All cheeses in the store are freshly made. People in Hong Kong drink a lot of mango lassi. This cup is really sweet and smooth in the mouth without being overpowering.
White Bean Cheesecake $35.
In fact, it consists of homemade cheese wrapped in a thin, crispy crust and served with corn and guava. The taste is mild and slightly sour.
Beef pancake rolls are made.
This dish consists of Australian beef ribs, peppers, hot sauce and mint sauce.
Beef pancake rolls $78.
The beef ribs marinated in spices are juicy and aromatic, and the vegetables are refreshing.
