“The city was successfully evacuated overnight, there is no threat to human life, although infrastructure may be compromised,” the social media site said. X (earlier Twitter), Icelandic President Gudni Johannesson announced, adding that flights have not been suspended.

The eruption began in the early hours of Sunday north of the town, which was evacuated due to fluctuating seismic activity due to the impending volcanic eruption.
In recent weeks, authorities have erected earth and rock barriers to prevent lava from reaching Grindavík, which is about 40 km southwest of the capital Reykjavík. However, the outbreak has breached the city’s protective barriers.

Following the eruption of the Svartsengi volcanic system in Grindavík last month, the town’s 4,000 residents were evacuated and tourist attractions closed. More than 100 residents had returned to their homes before a new eviction order was issued on Saturday.
