The Hidden World of Ultraviolet Light
Ultraviolet (UV) light, a wavelength beyond human perception, is a fascinating aspect of the light spectrum that many animals can see. While most humans are unable to detect UV light, there are exceptions based on age and the presence of UV-filtering lenses in the eyes.
Insight into Vision
Understanding how vision works is crucial to grasp the concept of UV light perception. The retina, located at the back of the eye, contains photoreceptors that transmit signals to the brain, interpreting light wavelengths as colors.
Although our blue-detecting cones can sense some UV light, the lens in the eye filters out most UV wavelengths. This filtering mechanism prevents UV light from reaching the cones, as explained by biologist Michael Bok from Lund University.
Perception Across Ages
A study conducted at the University of Georgia revealed that young individuals could perceive UV light at around 315 nanometers. However, this ability diminishes with age, indicating a decline in UV light perception after the age of 30.
Interestingly, some individuals, including those who underwent cataract surgery without lens replacement, can see a broader spectrum of UV light. This unique ability allows them to perceive UV light as pale blue or violet, similar to how Claude Monet experienced enhanced blue and purple tones in his paintings post-surgery.
Expanding the Spectrum
Historically, cataract surgery involved removing the cloudy lens without replacement, enabling individuals to see UV light. This exceptional vision of the UV spectrum provides a new perspective on color perception and the hidden world of ultraviolet light.
The Fascinating World of Ultraviolet Vision in Animals
Animals possess a remarkable ability to see ultraviolet (UV) light, a range of wavelengths that are invisible to most humans. While humans have evolved to primarily detect visible light, many animals, including mammals, invertebrates, fish, birds, reptiles, and amphibians, have specialized vision that includes UV light perception.
Animal Adaptations to UV Light
Research published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B has shown that animals use UV light for various purposes, such as improving contrast to detect objects in their environment. Predatory sea creatures rely on UV light to spot prey silhouettes, while insects use UV vision to identify patterns on flowers. Birds communicate through UV signals in their plumage and use UV light to locate ripe berries.
Evolutionary Insights
Studies suggest that the ability to see UV light is an ancient trait, with the ancestor of vertebrates possessing specialized photoreceptors for UV perception. However, in the course of human evolution, our vision shifted towards detecting violet light over UV light. This change may have been driven by the need to protect our eyes from potential damage associated with UV exposure or to maintain clearer vision, especially considering humans’ longer lifespan.
Conclusion
The prevalence of UV vision across diverse animal species highlights the importance of this sensory adaptation in their survival and behavior. Understanding how animals perceive and utilize UV light provides valuable insights into the complex and fascinating world of animal vision.

Naslen discusses Telugu film offers after Premalu
Nazlen says that after the film Premalu, there were offers from Telugu and Tamil. But the actor says that he does not know Telugu and does not get the emotion from dialogues without knowing the language.
Naslen added that when he speaks dialogue in a film, he wants to feel the emotion of the dialogue. The actor was speaking in an interview given to Q Studio.
Naslen said in an interview that most of the calls were for the character of the friend and one group called for a role similar to Sangeet Pratap Amal Davis’s character in Premalu.
After Premalu, there were Telugu offers. But don’t you know Telugu? When we say the dialogue without knowing that language, we don’t get the emotion of it. I want to feel the emotion of the dialogue when I say it. Calls are coming from Tamil and Telugu.
The call comes mainly to the companion character. One group said the character resembled Amal Davis. I am determined to do good films in Malayalam. If a character comes along who is that good, or who upsets us,’ says Naslen.
After the movies Thanneermattan Dinaman and Super Sharanya, Girish OC. Premalu is a directed film. Mamita Baiju and Naslen played the lead roles and the script was written by Girish AD and Kiran Josi.
Premalu was a love story set around Hyderabad. The film is produced by Dilish Pothan, Shyam Pushkaran and Fahad Fazil under the banner of Bhavana Studios. Apart from Mamita Baiju and Naslen, Meenakshi Ravindran, Sangeet Pratap, Shyam Mohan and Altaf Saleem also joined the film. Mathew Thomas appeared as a guest in the film.
