Lankum is a bogeyman appearing under other spellings (Lamkin or Lambkin) in a mournful nursery rhyme whose origins come from Scotland or Northumbria, in the north of England. It is in fact linked to the genre of murder ballads since it recounts the murder of a newborn, then of his mother, by the merciless character.
In Ireland, the orality of this story was recorded by the itinerant singer John Reilly (1926-1969) under the title False Lankum, which was to rename, in 2016, the most innovative and astonishing group on the current folk scene: the Dubliners of Lankum.
“He is evil incarnateshudders Radie Peat, voice and multi-instrumentalist of the quartet, as are her three comrades. He kills the baby with a pin, then his mother who has been awakened. The blood is collected in a basin by an accomplice nurse. » His friend Ian Lynch adds, however, that “in some versions, it is specified that it is not out of pure malice that he acts: he is a mason who has never been paid by the lord of the castle and he is taking revenge”.
“Political position”
Noted for a decade for his powerful and disturbing reinterpretations of secular songs, Lankum chose False Lankum to name his fourth album (Beggars/Rough Trade), without interpreting the horrible tale. Released in March 2023, this impressive record, praised outside traditionalist circles, propelled the group into another dimension. First at her place, since False Lankum took second place in the Irish chart, just behind Lana Del Rey, but ahead of Depeche Mode, U2 and The Weeknd.
Which is no small feat for music played on old instruments, very far from the green and joyful folklore exported on St. Patrick’s Day. Lankum prefers brown tones, which bring out smells of stout and peat. We wander on a rainy moor, on the quay of a stricken port or in an industrial wasteland. “Death is omnipresent thereconfirms Radie Peat. But there are also beautiful love songs, like Newcastle [incluse dans le recueil de contredanses The English Dancing Master, publié en 1651] or Lord Abore and Mary Flynn, even if it is very tragic. » This time, the monster is the mother: she poisons her son, who married against her will.
The improbable success of False Lankum also allowed the group to embark on an ambitious European tour, unfortunately thwarted by family problems. Ten dates were scheduled in France, with an expected concentration in the West. Only two survived, with an addition in Nantes for November.

The Louvre could give the Mona Lisa portrait a separate room

Such a move would allow visitors, many of whom visit the Louvre just for this painting, to have better impressions, Laurent des Cara told France Inter broadcaster.
“It’s always unpleasant when visitors aren’t given the best possible reception, and that’s the case with the Mona Lisa,” she said.
“I think a better solution is needed,” des Kara said, adding that the Louvre has contacted the Ministry of Culture about possible solutions.
The Louvre, which is the world’s most popular museum, was visited by almost nine million visitors in 2023.
Des Cara said 80% of them – 20,000 people a day – throng the Mona Lisa, often taking selfies in front of the painting.
Currently, the Mona Lisa is housed in protective glass in the Louvre’s Halle d’État, the largest room in the museum, but da Vinci’s masterpiece is not alone there.
Next to it are the works of 16th-century Venetian masters, and at the other end of the room hangs the Louvre’s largest painting – “The Wedding at Cannes” by Paolo Veronese.
