U.S. Imposes Sanctions on Extremist Israeli Settler
The United States implemented sanctions on Ben-Zion (Benzi) Gopstein, an extremist settler and the founder of “Lehava,” an organization known for engaging in violent activities in the occupied West Bank, according to a statement from the State Department.
Significance of the Sanctions
This latest round of sanctions by the U.S. targets an extremist settler closely associated with an Israeli cabinet member and whose group has been involved in violent attacks against Palestinians in the West Bank.
- Gopstein is a close ally of Israel’s ultranationalist minister of national security, Itamar Ben Gvir, and plays a significant role in the radical right in Israel.
- The State Department highlighted that under Gopstein’s leadership, Lehava has been linked to acts of violence or threats against Palestinians, particularly in sensitive areas.
Additional Sanctions: The U.S. Department of the Treasury also designated two entities, Mount Hebron Fund and Shlom Asiraich, for violating U.S. sanctions against other settlers.
- The Mount Hebron Fund raised approximately $140,000 for Yinon Levi, who was previously sanctioned, while Shlom Asiraich raised $31,000 for David Chai Chasdai, also sanctioned for involvement in violence in the West Bank.
Broader Implications
The recent U.S. sanctions were part of a coordinated effort with the European Union, which also announced sanctions against Lehava and other extremist settlers and entities connected to violence against Palestinians.
- The EU blacklisted Lehava and the “Hilltop Youth,” a radical group known for violent acts against Palestinians in the West Bank.
- Key figures like Meir Ettinger and Elisha Yered, involved in deadly attacks against Palestinians, were sanctioned by the EU.
- Neria Ben Pazi and Yinon Levi, accused of violent acts against Palestinians, were also blacklisted by the EU.
Statements and Reactions
Official Response: The State Department expressed concern over the recent violence in the West Bank and urged Israel to take action against extremist settlers. The U.S. remains committed to ensuring accountability for such actions.
- In response, Ben Gvir criticized the U.S. and EU sanctions, labeling them as part of an anti-Semitic agenda. He called for an end to the targeting of settlers by Western countries.
