Mahi ∙ The Mahi lower court remanded the man who tried to extort money by filing a false harassment complaint. Muhammad Iqbal (61), a native of Kanhangad who is accused in many cases in various districts, was caught by police from his home in Karakot Vattapally. A few days ago, he had taken a room in a lodge in Mahi where he stayed for three days and lodged a false complaint that the room boy had been harassing the woman who was with him and posing as his wife.
During investigation, police found that the complaint was fake and the torture story was fabricated to extort money from the lodge owner. It turned out that the woman’s husband had been missing for some time and that he had approached her as a rescuer and was threatening the woman and torturing her mentally and physically. Police said he had filed similar reports before.
Police unraveled the mystery of the false complaint as part of the investigation by collecting CCTV footage and fingerprints. Mahi CI: R. Shanmugam led the investigation. He gives a false address and name when caught stealing and has names like Sivashankar, Suryanarayanan, Manu Babu, Vishnu, Jayaprakash and Manoj Pallam. The court remanded the defendant in custody.
