Loïs Openda got off to an excellent start at RB Leipzig and that is not without consequences. The German club said goodbye to one of its competitors on Tuesday. After all, Timo Werner is returning to the Premier League on loan.
Last summer, Leipzig paid a record amount to acquire Openda from RC Lens. And that turned out to be a good move by the Red Bull Club. The Red Devil has now played 25 games for his German employer. He was good for no less than 15 goals and 4 assists.
And these great performances now lead to Werner’s departure. However, the national player has played more than 50 international matches for Germany and has already scored more than 110 goals for Leipzig. But partly due to Openda’s strong performance, he won’t see much action this season.
Via England to EK
However, the striker wants to work with the team during the European Championship on home soil next summer. And he has to create enough minutes to do that. Last month it was announced that Leipzig was willing to cooperate on a loan transfer.
And this agreement now brings Werner back to the Premier League, where he previously had a failed adventure with Chelsea FC. The striker will work in London again. He was officially announced at Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday evening.
Limited purchase price
The current number 5 in England will take over from Werner until the end of this season, but also has the option to make the contract permanent. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, this purchase option amounts to a relatively limited sum of around 17 million euros.
The German striker will be given jersey number 16 at his new club. If the paperwork is completed in time, he can make his debut in the top line-up next weekend against Manchester United. Due to Heung-Min Son’s departure for the Asian Cup, there is already a free place in the attack line.
