A rebel group of the country has withdrawn the army from the important town of Myawati on the Myanmar-Thai border. There, the rebel fighters temporarily retreated in the face of counterattacks by the junta troops. They seized the country’s main trading city from the junta earlier this month. An official informed this information on Wednesday (April 24). British news agency Reuters reported this news.
A spokesman for the Karen National Union (KNU) told Reuters they had “temporarily retreated” from the town of Miyawati as junta forces returned to key strategic areas.
One of the forces in Myanmar’s ethnic struggle is the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA). Mentioning the name of this force, Saw Taw Ni said, ‘KNLA forces will destroy the junta forces advancing towards Miyawati and the forces supporting them.’
3,000 civilians were forced to flee the recent war in Miyawati. The rebels engaged in a battle to drive out the junta troops who had been hiding in a crossing bridge on the border for days.
The Thai government says many of those civilians who have already fled have returned to Myanmar. The country urged Myanmar not to spread the war across the border.
Junta troops entered the region with the help of a regional militia with the aim of recapturing Miyawati, according to Sao Toni. The group remained silent when the KNU blockaded Miyawati in early April.
Reuters did not receive a response to requests for comment from militia group Karen National Army and junta officials.
Myanmar’s junta is under unprecedented pressure three years after ousting a democratically elected civilian government. The country has lost control of key border areas to rebel groups.
