If you like it cheap, you will find it at Temu. The Chinese shopping app offers T-shirts, shoes, wooden spoons, wigs, lingerie, nose hair trimmers – that’s pretty much everything – at extremely low prices. down. The quality is not always beyond doubt.
This does not prevent Temu from experiencing a meteoric rise and competing with competitors such as Wish or Aliexpress, which also act as third-party platforms, for more and more customers. And this despite the fact that Temu will not be founded until 2022.
Temu has definitely convinced Swiss internet users and consumers.
This does not stop Temu from continuing its expansion plans in Switzerland. As an investigation shows, the company founded a debt collection company in Basel a few days ago under the name Whaleco Switzerland AG. The founding company Whaleco Technology Limited, based in Ireland, is responsible for trading in German-speaking countries.
You can pay via Twint and soon also by invoice
For David Morant from consultancy Carpathia, this could indicate that Temu orders will soon be payable by invoice and not just by credit card payment. “Temu has so far stood out for its ability to respond to local conditions, and invoice payment remains very popular in Switzerland.” The Swiss payment method Twint is already available on Temu.
Every year Carpathia publishes the list of the largest online retailers in our country. David Morant ventures an exclusive prediction to CH Media, publisher of Watson:
“We assume that Temu will succeed in climbing into the Swiss top 10 in 2023 and achieve sales of over 300 million francs.”
Judging by the number of packages, Temu would have already overtaken the giant Aliexpress, which was in eighth place in 2022. A cargo plane carrying Temu goods flew to Switzerland several times a week. “In the public perception, Temu has taken over its Chinese online competitors,” says David Morant.
Faster delivery than Aliexpress
According to David Morant, Temu stands out from AliExpress in particular through efficient logistics, stronger advertising and marketing activities and better local customer targeting:
“With Temu, delivery takes 7 to 12 days, while with Aliexpress you have to wait several weeks for many products”
As a result, Temu is gaining more and more customers, especially in the craft sector.
“In conversations with companies, we hear more and more often that they can sometimes get laser measuring devices, sanding sheets or screws up to 15 times cheaper than from a Swiss dealer.”

China’s (very) cheap online competition is causing a real headache for local retailers. “This is about the question of copies, supply chains, sustainability or quality defects, which are sometimes serious and also represent a security risk,” explains Bernhard Egger, director of Handelsverband.swiss to SRF. The association’s members include well-known companies such as Coop, Caran d’Ache, Chicorée, Amorana, Manor, Migros and PKZ.
Temu denies the allegations
And what does Temu say? Founding a company locally is a natural step and evidence of a long-term commitment to Switzerland, the company replied to a written request.
“We are clearly expressing our desire to be a good local corporate citizen.”
Before
Regarding Temu’s criticized data protection practices, there are said to have been numerous misunderstandings due to deliberate misinformation by stakeholders, as well as so-called “phishing” attacks by fraudsters impersonating Temu to steal private information.
“We continue to strengthen our own security and privacy measures and have taken legal action against dozens of these scammers,” Temu writes. And: “We adhere to the laws and regulations of the markets in which we operate.” The company does not provide figures on its activities in Switzerland.

A third educational escape room will soon open its doors in Geneva. It will cost the authorities 25,000 francs. Is this the new strategy to combat boredom in class?
Escape rooms are growing like mushrooms in Swiss cities. The appeal of the game is solving puzzles with your classmates and escaping a locked room before time runs out. Private providers are usually behind this booming offer. But in Geneva, the cantonal education department decided to get involved. A third escape room for students will open in the town of Calvin later this month, CH Media has learned.
