The power plant’s spokesman, Marek Sviták, told the News that the power plant consumed 803,000 MWh last year, or about five percent of the electricity produced. “Year-on-year, the power plant saved electricity that households in a smaller city will use in a year,” noted Sviták.
The reduction in consumption is primarily due to the optimal setting of the largest circulation pumps, which ensure water circulation through the cooling towers and condensers in the engine room. Since the year before last, energy experts have been using the results of modern mathematical methods to process large amounts of data. “We started working with big data for operating modes for the first block in 2021. We have been using the method fully for both blocks since last year. As a result, we managed to save more than five thousand megawatt hours of electricity,” said Jan Kruml, director of the Temelín Nuclear Power Plant.
Using modern mathematical methods, energy experts compare several variables – the temperature and humidity, the temperature of the cooling water and the consumption of the circulation pumps that drive the water into the cooling towers. The result is an optimal adjustment of the performance of the pumps that pump the water into the cooling towers. Operators then update this setting twice daily based on the weather forecast.
Electricity production in the Czech Republic fell by 10 percent last year
“The efficiency of the operation of our power plants is not just about increasing output or managing shutdowns. It is also about the savings that can be achieved through optimal traffic management. “Last year’s savings in Temelín alone would be enough to cover the annual consumption of about fifteen hundred Czech households,” explained Bohdan Zronek, CEZ board member and head of the nuclear energy department.
Since the beginning of the year, the Temelín power plant has produced 0.8 terawatt hours of electricity. Together with Dukovany, these are the sources that produce the largest amount of clean electricity and therefore contribute significantly to the ČEZ Group’s emission-free production. Thanks to nuclear power plants, around two dozen million tons of CO2 are not released into the atmosphere every year.
Temelín had the third highest production in its history
