Congress Passes Ukraine Aid: Is It Sufficient?
With a 79-18 vote, the Senate greenlights a $95 billion relief package to offer crucial support to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. This decision comes after prolonged Republican discord over funding Ukraine's defense against Russia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy hails the additional $60 billion aid as a potential game-changer. The bill also allocates $26 billion to Israel, humanitarian aid for Gaza, and $8 billion for security in Taiwan and the Indo-Pacific region. President Joe Biden has committed to promptly enacting this legislation into law.
In Ukraine, efforts are underway to ensure swift delivery of military aid to the front lines to aid troops in their battle against the advancing Russian forces. While the passage of the aid package by Congress brings relief and renewed hope to Ukraine, many on the ground express skepticism about the extent to which billions of dollars in supplies can address the country's deep-rooted issues.

Extended Coverage of Congressional Vote:
- Contained within the bill is a provision that threatens to ban TikTok in the U.S. unless its Chinese owner divests the platform. However, experts suggest that a ban is unlikely before the 2024 election.
- Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell praises the approval of aid to Ukraine while attributing a prolonged delay to Tucker Carlson and Donald Trump.
Supreme Court to Address Abortion Care and Emergency Room Standards
The Supreme Court is set to deliberate on whether Idaho's near-total abortion ban violates a federal law designed to ensure specific emergency medical care standards, particularly for pregnant women. This ruling could impact not only Idaho but also states like Texas with similar abortion restrictions that conflict with federal regulations.
Under the Idaho law, which came into effect following changes to Roe v. Wade, performing an abortion can lead to criminal penalties, except in cases where it is necessary to safeguard the pregnant woman's life.
A federal law from 1986 mandates appropriate emergency room care for patients, with the Biden administration advocating for abortions to be included in certain emergency situations. Journalist Lawrence Hurley outlines the complexities and appeals that have elevated this case to the Supreme Court.
Revelations from Trump Trial Witness
In ongoing proceedings related to Donald Trump's hush money case, former AMI CEO David Pecker testified about how stories concerning Trump's opponents were sensationalized during the 2016 campaign. This included a fabricated piece implicating Sen. Ted Cruz's father in the Kennedy assassination, with Trump's lawyer Michael Cohen allegedly playing a significant role.
During the trial, prosecutors also aimed to implicate Steve Bannon, a key Trump campaign adviser, but Trump's legal team objected, denying prior notice of Bannon's potential involvement as a co-conspirator.
Prosecutors sought Judge Juan Merchan's intervention to hold Trump in contempt for breaching a gag order by attacking witnesses. Merchan deferred ruling on the gag order issue.
Among the trial attendees were a group of teenagers who opted to spend their school-free day observing the courtroom proceedings.
Explore a detailed recap of Day 6 of the trial.
During the trial, a tragic incident occurred as Maxwell Azzarello set himself on fire outside the courthouse, leading to his untimely death. This shocking act left acquaintances in disbelief, pondering the motivations behind his actions.
Runaway Military Horses Cause Chaos in London
Witnesses were left stunned as two British military horses, one of them appearing to be covered in blood, ran riderless through central London. The incident occurred during routine exercises, resulting in injuries to several individuals and horses. The British army confirmed the mishap, which took place in an area patrolled by the elite Household Guards unit.
Despite the confusion surrounding their escape, the horses were eventually captured after being spotted dashing past iconic landmarks and colliding with vehicles during the morning rush hour. They were safely returned to their camp following the commotion.

However, demonstrations are set to persist as alternative solutions are explored. The university has outlined guidelines to ensure the safety and inclusivity of the protest.
Similar protests have emerged at various U.S. campuses, including the University of Michigan, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and California State Polytechnic, Humbolt. The movement continues to gain momentum across educational institutions.
FDA Discovers Bird Flu Fragments in Pasteurized Milk
Recent findings by the Food and Drug Administration revealed traces of the bird flu virus in pasteurized milk. Despite this discovery, the FDA assures consumers that the milk remains safe for consumption. The agency is conducting further tests to determine the effectiveness of pasteurization in deactivating the virus.
Amid an outbreak of the H5N1 strain of bird flu in dairy cow herds across eight states, the FDA emphasizes that the presence of virus fragments does not pose an immediate threat. Ongoing investigations aim to provide clarity on the situation in the coming days.
FBI Director Dismisses Trump’s Political Investigation Pledge
The FBI director has publicly refuted former President Trump’s promise to investigate political adversaries. This rejection comes amidst escalating tensions within the political landscape. The bureau remains committed to upholding its independence and impartiality in all matters.
FBI Director Rejects Trump’s Vow to Investigate Political Rivals
In a recent interview with NBC Nightly News’ Lester Holt, FBI Director Christopher Wray dismissed Trump’s promise to investigate political opponents and disagreed with him on the portrayal of Jan. 6 defendants as “hostages.” Wray emphasized that any investigations conducted by the FBI must adhere to their established rules, procedures, best practices, and core values.
Appointed by Trump in 2017, Wray also addressed various national security concerns, such as terrorism, cyber threats, and the impact of platforms like TikTok. Furthermore, he highlighted the FBI’s collaboration with college campuses to alert them about potential antisemitic threats and violence related to ongoing demonstrations.

Staff Pick: A Lesbian Archive Inside a Brooklyn Brownstone
During Lesbian Visibility Week, attention is drawn to the work of the Lesbian Herstory Archives, a nonprofit organization dedicated to collecting, preserving, and granting access to a wealth of lesbian history since 1974. Situated in a Brooklyn brownstone, the archives contain a diverse range of materials, including books, newspapers, films, photographs, oral histories, and clothing, offering insights into the lives and historical contributions of lesbians and other queer women.
My visit to the archives left me feeling like a child in a candy store surrounded by so much “herstory.” Notable items included an issue of Vice Versa, a lesbian magazine from the 1940s, and a poster from a 1974 lesbian music festival in Michigan. — Brooke Sopelsa, NBC Out editorial director
