Samsung has just made official its 990 EVO, a rather atypical SSD: in M.2 format, it has the peculiarity of integrating a hybrid interface compatible with PCIe 4.0 x4 and PCIe 5.0 x2. The manufacturer presents it as a solution that combines performance and energy efficiency.

The aging 970 EVO Plus finally has a worthy successor, the Samsung 990 EVO. Offered in capacities of 1TB (MZ-V9E1T0B/AM) and 2 to (MZ-V9E2T0B/AM), this SSD in M.2 format is classified in the manufacturer’s EVO series and favors the best possible function/price ratio over simple raw performance. It should therefore be suitable for gamers, but also for workstations that do not require exceptional speeds.

A hybrid SSD focused on the present and the future
The greatest originality of this 990 EVO lies in its user interface. It’s actually the first SSD in existence Both PCIe 4.0 4x and PCIe 5.0 2x compatible. In this way it can be used with motherboards equipped with an M.2 slot wired in PCIe 4.0 or PCIe 5.0, but also with the PS5. The most observant will probably have already noticed that the bandwidth between these two configurations is the same; Samsung also points this out Performance should be the same with PCIe 4.0 or PCIe 5.0.

On the performance side, the manufacturer explains that the 990 EVO offers Sequential throughputs of up to 5 GB/s read and 4.2 GB/s write (with Intelligent Turbo Write active, therefore on limited data volume), thanks to the use of an in-house controller and 3-TLC NAND flash memory. Of course we are below what a 990 PRO from the same manufacturer can offer, but the target market is different. This also explains theLack of any DRAM memory on the 990 EVO.

The 990 EVO also shows a excellent energy efficiency, which is advertised as being up to 70% better than the 970 EVO Plus. The 1 TB model of the 990 EVO achieves 1020 MB per watt when reading and 933 MB per watt when writing, while the 970 EVO Plus is at 636 MB/W and 550 MB/W respectively. Samsung does not disclose the exact consumption of its new SSD, but it is certainly lower than that of very high-quality, faster models. However, it should be noted that the manufacturer doesn’t bother to provide heating The 990 EVO needs a “thermal label”.
