The CES tech trade fair has to have crazy things, that’s part of it. Exactly four years ago, Samsung’s crazy thing was the spherical robot Ballie. It was supposed to be some kind of pet/helper for the house but never made it to the store. But now Ballie is back and he now seems surprisingly useful – through AI, of course.
In the video we see Ballie guarding the house when the owner is not home. The little robot can film the real pet – the dog – turning the garbage can upside down. Ballie can simply send this as a text message to the owner and the owner can respond in normal language: “Give him something to eat and turn on his favorite video.” This food comes from a smart dog food bowl. But what about this video?

Moving mini projector
The video is projected by Ballie onto the ground in front of the dog’s paws. When it gets dark, Ballie turns on the lights. And when the boss comes home, the robot projects “Welcome” onto the floor. Ballie can also project images onto the wall to create a video call or simply a TV screen. Even videos on the ceiling are possible, for example of a huge starry sky.
Ballie could also control other devices in the home, such as the air conditioner, washer, dryer and more. This probably works via Samsung Smart Things or the open smart home standard Matter.
It’s unclear whether Ballie will actually come to the store. Samsung once again hasn’t provided any pricing or availability information, which for now makes Ballie seem like a fun CES trend meant to showcase all of Samsung’s other devices and features.
