According to the Polish newspaper Gazeta Prawna, Slovakia is a transit country for migrants coming mainly from the Middle East and Afghanistan on their way to Western Europe, especially Germany. These migrants enter the European Union via the Serbian-Hungarian border.

In connection with the recent expansion of controls, Gazeta Prawna writes that this year the border guards arrested 2,078 foreigners at the border with Slovakia for illegally crossing the border. In the same period last year there were 61 people, in 2021 there were 22 people, the newspaper writes, citing the border guard spokesman, according to which these people are on their way to Germany.

According to the newspaper, the Polish border guard has checked over a million people and more than 450,000 vehicles since the introduction of temporary border controls on the border with Slovakia – since October 4th this year.
In addition to Poland, the Czech Republic and Austria also introduced border controls with Slovakia this year. Slovakia itself uses it on the border with Hungary. Other states, including Germany, have introduced similar measures on their borders with neighboring countries, including Germany on the border with the Czech Republic.
