Jakarta – Bad luck experienced by a 70-year-old elderly person. Parasitic worms were found in his body.
This was discovered after the doctor examined the elderly. Read the whole story here!
Quoted from detikHealthInitially, the patient went to the hospital to undergo a series of treatments, including a CT scan of his stomach. This happened because he had previously been diagnosed with cancer in the colon, or what is known as local sigmoid adenocarcinoma.
The CT scan results showed that the patient suffered from choledocholithiasis, or stones in the bile ducts and dilatation of the bile ducts, and the cancer had not yet metastasized widely. He then underwent laparoscopic tumor resection, cholecystectomy, and cholangioscopy.
During cholangioscopy or a noninvasive endoscopic method for direct visual diagnosis and simultaneous therapeutic intervention of the biliary tract, five large flatworms were seen alive in their bile ducts.
The species of worm found was Clonorchis sinensis, a species of worm that looks flat and is shaped like a leaf. According to a report in the New England Journal of Medicine, these worms are usually found in East Asia.
These flatworms usually infect a person’s bile ducts after eating raw or undercooked freshwater fish or shrimp. The parasite can migrate to the bile ducts, gallbladder or liver, where it develops into adult worms 15 to 20 millimeters long.
Most people infected with these parasitic worms don’t know they have them. This disease usually has no symptoms, but if left untreated it can lead to liver inflammation, gallstones and bile duct cancer.
This infection is also usually diagnosed by the detection of parasite eggs in a stool sample, even if that patient’s stool test was negative. After the worms were removed, the patient received treatment with praziquantel or an antiworm drug and underwent additional chemotherapy to treat the cancer he was suffering from.
