Burnout, pill addiction – there were lows in Carsten Maschmeyer’s success story. In our conversation, he told us how others should avoid this.
Relying on tablets to be able to achieve more and more: Investor Carsten Maschmeyer. Founder scene
Carsten Maschmeyer dropped the bombshell on Linkedin a while ago: Burnout, pill addiction, withdrawal, private life in ruins. In order to be successful as a financial manager, Maschmeyer had resorted to medication; he had to perform more and more, and that had long-term consequences.
He also wrote down these experiences and what he learned from them in a book. What worries him, Maschmeyer told Gründerszene, is that as an investor he has observed similar behavior in the startup scene: Time management is often understood as squeezing the last 20 minutes out of the day. With the danger of losing control at some point and ultimately falling into the same spiral. From his point of view, it’s not worth it – says the billionaire.

The route to the pharmacy is not the right one
Of course, he has experienced the highs; he sold his financial sales company AWD for billions. “You feel like Scrooge McDuck at first – but it quickly becomes boring getting the latest statements from the property manager. I found myself in an incredible void.” Nevertheless, Maschmeyer would like to encourage founders. It’s great to achieve something with a lot of work, he says. It won’t work with eight hours, nor with ten. But if there are warning signs such as insomnia or no longer being able to switch off, going to the pharmacy, as was recommended to him at the time, is not the right one. He had to understand that painfully. Of course, in a phase-out phase, 20 or 30-year-olds would have to work 18 hours a day for a few weeks. “But this cannot be a permanent situation,” emphasizes Maschmeyer.
Now that may be easy to say, Maschmeyer admits, for someone who doesn’t have to worry much about money. And who, in order to be able to celebrate his successes, didn’t stick to what he preaches today. How must founders feel when investors invest millions in a company? After all, the investors have high expectations and want to see profits in the end – at least for themselves. “Of course there are founders who don’t want to disappoint their investors – promise and deliver. But if someone is completely worn out and looks exhausted, they can no longer convince anyone of their product in a video conference. Anyone who is overworked like this quickly becomes intolerant and no longer has the principles of delegation and prioritization ready, the entrepreneur and investor notes .

So does he pay attention to stress resilience among founders during the pitch? “If you feel despair because things aren’t going well or because the mountain of tasks seems overwhelming, that’s definitely not a good sign,” says Maschmeyer, who really seems to be in his element. Good startup bosses should recognize when they need support. “You can’t take care of strategy, marketing and development at the same time, especially not when you’re also doing fundraising.” So his suggested solution? Hire more people. “Saving too much on personnel is a reduction in potential.” He consequently considers the lean startup credo of getting by with as little as possible for as long as possible to be nonsense.
Is a scene trend developing?
With his advance, his admission of personal defeat, Maschmeyer is riding a wave in the startup scene. Entrepreneurs like Christina Schmitt also vented with a viral post on Linkedin and settled accounts with their startup, which was about to end at the time. A little bit to get attention, as she admitted in an interview with Gründerszene. Julia Rittereiser, founder of a femtech startup, did the same. The topic of relaxation and switching off has also become increasingly important in recent times. The book “Why we sleep” by the British researcher Matthew Walker, for example, has long been passed around in the scene as an absolute reading recommendation.

Maschmeyer’s findings are hardly groundbreaking, and the investor seems to be aware of that. Nor his tips for a more balanced working day: don’t stare at your cell phone first thing in the morning, don’t chase after every email or message and lose concentration, take real breaks, exercise to reduce stress, have a business-free sleep routine in the evening, digital detox on Sunday. And yet: You can’t contradict Maschmeyer when he says: “A mentally ill member of the founding team weakens the entire company, which is why founders have to look after themselves and investors also have to look out for founders.” When he says highly concentrated mate teas, Red Bull vending machines or caffeine tablets as a warning sign. When he calls for self-reflection – “Am I still as euphoric? Do I still have as many ideas? Do I go to the office awake in the morning and full of energy or am I not in the mood.”
And so what Maschmeyer is saying takes on the character of a management consultant. They usually don’t know any more than others, but because there’s a lot of money involved, that gives them weight and people listen to them more closely. It’s important, too, things that you actually white, but to be held against again.

Cold and snowflakes are not enough: the heating is turned on again in Vilnius
The renewal of the heating season in the capital was announced on Monday by the Vilnius city municipality, which terminated it on April 9.
“Today, the municipality made a decision to renew the heat supply to residential buildings. The reasons, we can all see – there are certain tricks of the weather, today we also received snow (…). Taking into account the fact that residents only partially used the right to renew the heat supply, about 20 percent apartment buildings turned on heating during this period,” Kęstutis Karosas, head of the Energy Department of the capital’s municipality, said in a comment sent to Elta.
“In order for the heat to reach the radiators installed in the apartments, it is important that the supervisors of the internal systems of the house appointed by the house administrators or associations update the heat supply in the heat points. The municipality informs residents when the heat will reach your home depends on how quickly this action will be performed.
According to K. Karos, heat pumps will be turned on in apartment buildings with non-modernized heating systems, so the heat should reach the homes of such residents on Monday evening.
Also, the representative of the municipality emphasized that the residents themselves should take the initiative regarding the termination of the heating of their apartment building.
The municipalities of Šiauliai, Panevėžys and Klaipėda already informed Elta in the second week of April that they will not finish the heating season yet, and they do not plan to do so this week either.
“Since it is two degrees of heat around the clock and there is snow outside the window, we really (this week – ELTA) do not plan to end the heating season,” Šiauliai municipality representative Vitalis Lebedis told Elta on Monday.
According to Klaipėda municipality representative Aušra Lukauskienė, the central heating will not be turned off in the port city due to the cool weather.
“It’s cloudy, rainy, windy and really cold here. According to experts, the average daily temperature is 3-4 degrees. (…) There is not much thought about cutting off the heating,” she said.
“Everything will depend on the weather. (…) So far, the warming has not been very big, so we watched the hydrometeorologists’ forecasts in those days when it was warm, and now we will also watch what they promise,” Panevėžys municipality representative Rūta Karčiauskienė also informed Elta.
According to Kaunas municipality representative Mindaugas Drăsutis, the city did not turn off the heating together with the capital in the second week of April due to poor weather forecasts. According to him, Kaunas plans to continue heating.
“So far, nothing has changed in this regard,” he confirmed.
Apartment residents have the right to make their own decisions about the beginning or end of the heating season in their home, if more than half of the residents agree to it and the temperature in the apartment is not lower than 18 degrees.
As reported by the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service, drizzle and snow will prevail in Lithuania on Monday, in some places, mainly in the northern and eastern districts, they will be heavy. Due to sticky snow, a layer of wet snow forms in some places.
The service estimates that a temporary snow cover of more than 10 cm may form in places, mainly in northwestern areas, by Monday evening. It will snow the least in the southern part of the country, up to 1-3 cm.

Gold prices fell for the first time in three business days on heavy selling as concerns about the spread of conflict in the Middle East eased. As concerns about the tense situation in the Middle East changed, crude oil prices fell briefly to the $81 level early this morning. After that, buying was done with a focus on supply and demand factors, such as technical buying and expectations of tight supply this summer, and although there were times when the stock rose into positive territory , the rebound was limited. The exchange of retaliatory attacks between Israel and Iran has calmed down, leading to speculation that both sides are trying to end the situation. Concerns that conflicts in the Middle East will spread and disrupt crude oil supplies have subsided. It was also pointed out that some countries that are members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) have sufficient production capacity and are able to deal with supply disruptions.
