Lucía Mariel Arana Peña is known for being the first woman specialized in Medical Physics in Guatemala. He is currently working at a hospital in Estonia, where she is focused on advancing breast imaging methodologies.
Recently, the Guatemalan was part of the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), held at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris.
Lucía Arana, the first Guatemalan specialized in Medical Physics to triumph in Europe
Lucia Arana has stood out in the field of science by being the first female medical physicist in Guatemala. He graduated in Applied Physics from the University of San Carlos in Guatemala and then decided to specialize with a master’s degree in Advanced Studies in Medical Physics at the Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics in Italy.
Her passion for science also led her to share her knowledge as a teacher at the Usac School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, inspiring future generations of Guatemalan scientists. Additionally, she earned her PhD in physics from the University of Trieste in Italy.
Medical Physics, an interdisciplinary discipline that combines the principles of physics with medicine, plays a crucial role in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. The Guatemalan’s work in this area has focused on the development of breast imaging techniques, carrying out her work at the Tartu University Hospital, in Estonia. This is one of the largest hospitals in the country.
Participation in the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the institution founded by the Nobel Prize in Physics Abdus Salam
On April 10, 2024, Lucía had the honor of participating in the 60th anniversary of the Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP)held at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France. Founded in 1964 by Nobel Laureate Abdus Salam, ICTP is a leading institution promoting scientific collaboration and knowledge exchange globally.
At this event, Lucía shared her testimony as an alumni, highlighting the importance of ICTP in global scientific development. The celebration aimed to show how the institution promotes scientific collaboration and knowledge exchange in various fields, including medical physics. Lucía, along with professionals from Brazil, Ghana, Tunisia, Ethiopia, Cuba and other countries, shared her experience and knowledge. The French physicist and 2012 Nobel Prize winner Serge Haroche was also present at the event.
Lucía Arana’s participation in the 60th anniversary of the ICTP highlights her professional career and highlights her as an ambassador of Guatemala on the international science stage. It is a pride that we Guatemalans are represented by women like Lucía, who inspires future generations of scientists, not only in our country, but internationally.

Alcohol Consumption Linked to Memory Loss: University of Pennsylvania Study
It’s not just drinking alcohol increasing the risk of dying from a heart attack and other long-term illnesses, but they can also cause memory loss literally the next morning. A group of scientists from the University of Pennsylvania (USA) tried to find out why there was such a “bad alcohol addiction.” The results are published in Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research.
As the researchers note, memory loss is a very common consequence of alcohol consumption. To understand the reasons, scientists tested 79 volunteer students between 18 and 22 years old.
They were all fitted with wrist sensors to monitor their alcohol intake, and were also asked to complete questionnaires every morning stating whether they had drunk the night before and whether they remembered of the evening’s events.
During the trial, which lasted a month, 486 episodes of alcohol consumption were recorded, of which 147 were followed by amnesia. 69.3% of the test participants “taste alcohol” at least once during this period.
By comparing the data collected, the study authors were able to identify three main factors that affect memory loss after drinking – level of alcohol consumption, its length and maximum value.
“The results support the idea that how a person drinks is important in predicting the risk of alcohol-related memory loss,” the scientists said.
According to researchers, the rapid increase in alcohol levels increases the risk of memory loss 2.69 times. The highest level of alcohol in the blood increases the risk of blacking out 2.93 times. But the alcohol period has the strongest effect: by drinking alcohol for a long time, the risk of temporary amnesia increases 4.16 times.
At the same time, the authors of the study admitted that the representation of the obtained results is not ideal. First, they had a very small sample of subjects, most of whom were white girls (86.1%) (55.7%). Second, the test only lasted a month and fell immediately on St. Patrick’s Day (related to alcohol consumption) and then on the Easter weekend (when many students go home, where they drink less).
It has also been noted that in some cases, students may not have realized that they had memory loss and apparently did not record it on the questionnaire.
Other news from the world of science
As UNIAN wrote, scientists use artificial intelligence studied Raphael’s painting “Madonna and a Rose” and he confirmed that one of the four figures on the canvas was not painted by the master himself. In order to understand this, the program had to do a detailed study of Raphael’s style in those paintings where there is no doubt about his authorship.
We also told you that the standards of the students at the school and the students at the university are to some extent depending on their own surname. Scientists have found that when examining written work, teachers always end up giving lower grades. And usually students whose last name starts with the last letters of the alphabet are given.
