Israel’s Military Initiates Evacuation Orders in Rafah
1 hour ago
Israel’s military has commenced instructing Palestinians to vacate parts of eastern Rafah in anticipation of a “limited” operation in the southern Gaza city.
Approximately 100,000 individuals are being directed to relocate to an “expanded humanitarian area” in Khan Younis and al-Mawasi.
Following seven months of conflict, Israel asserts the necessity to capture Rafah to eliminate Hamas.
However, the UN and US caution that an attack on the city, where over a million displaced Palestinians seek refuge, could result in catastrophic outcomes.
Reports indicate that Israeli airstrikes in Rafah led to the deaths of at least 19 Palestinians overnight, following the killing of three Israeli soldiers by Hamas rocket fire near the Israeli-controlled Kerem Shalom border crossing – a crucial aid entry point into Gaza.
These incidents occurred amidst stalled negotiations for a new ceasefire and hostage release agreement, with mediators continuing their mediation efforts.
During an initial press briefing on Monday morning, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson Lt Col Nadav Shoshani emphasized that the planned operation in Rafah is of a “limited scope”.
He clarified that no specific timeline has been announced and the evacuation affecting an estimated 100,000 individuals will be executed in a gradual manner.
Nevertheless, the apprehensions of local residents and over a million displaced Palestinians crowded in Gaza’s southernmost city persist regarding the possibility of a broader offensive.
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has long maintained that a decisive victory against Hamas necessitates a full-scale operation in Rafah.
Israel alleges that Rafah shelters four remaining Hamas battalions, comprising thousands of combatants.
Various Western and Arab nations, along with the UN, have consistently cautioned against a large-scale ground incursion in Rafah due to the potential for significant civilian casualties.
Officials from Israel and its primary ally, the US, have engaged in discussions to explore alternative, more targeted strategies. It remains uncertain if the recent evacuation directives are part of these deliberations.
The conflict in Gaza erupted when Hamas militants breached southern Israel on 7th October, resulting in approximately 1,200 casualties and the abduction of 252 individuals, according to Israeli reports.
As per the Hamas-run health ministry, over 34,600 fatalities have occurred in Gaza since the onset of the hostilities.
